Shorted Alt. connections... oops

I have a buddy that was working on his car and he shorted out the two connections on the alternator by accident. The battery was still connected. It melted a rice grain size space out of the wrench where it connected. Anyways, the car now has an electrical issue that is intermittent. It seems to happen only when driving and after about 15 minutes of driving. The gauges go crazy (except the speedo and it is also electric too). We had the battery tested and it seemed to have checked out 100% and don't have a battery that will allow the hood to shut, so we can't eliminate that.

What all fuses are just fine. What kind of issues could this have caused. I feel it should be isolated to the alternator, battery, and the cables coming off of the alternator since everything is fused by default.

Any thoughts? Opinions? Ideas?

Wink

I would look in the area where the arc took place.

What did the wrench short against ??

You have a melted or burnt wire some place.

The B terminal cut be melted in half where you can`t see it.

Just don`t pay any attention to all the shop manuals that say disconnect the negative battery cable First!!!!!

Because nothing can happen!!!

Thanks,

That's why it's called an accident. Obviously it is suppose to be removed.
