Just picked up a low mile 86 22r, the front main seal is leaking a little bit of oil (nothing major, but still leaves drips on the asphalt ) Couple questions....I have a full gasket set for my 22re, would that crank seal work? How would i change this thing? Pop off timing cover and push it out from behind, and then press the new one in? Is it the same timing cover as the 22re? AND lastly, the trucks been sitting awhile, is it one of those thigs where you just get oil circulating by driving it alot for a couple days the the seal will swell up and keep the oil in? or am i not that lucky...

yes they are the same seal from 22r to 22re I usually put a rag on the crank shaft and pop it out with a screw driver. thats why I use a rag to protect the crank then I put a small amount of oil or assembly lube on the inside of the seal so it slides on and doesn't want to roll over on the crank also when the seal is out check for a ring on the crank the seal with put a groove in the crank after a while

Do not need to remove the timing cover to instal...just the balancer and the oil pump. Easy

you dont have to remove the oil pump just the crank pulley

I prefer to work on the work bench where I can see the seal is in the housing correct. Plus, I like to put a new oil pump seal on too...because you never know. It could be leaking from there too and your attention is soley aimed at the crankseal. Kinda sucks to do a job twice when you were 5 bolts from a common pitfall.

ahh, good call snobdds (about the oil pump seal). I actually think i'd prefer pulling the cover and doing it on the bench as well for a couple reasons. easy access to the seal, ability to see whats going on around the seal after you put it in, kinda make sureits seated good i guess, and lastly, i have some major cleaning to do to the timing cover, maybe even some painting.

Reason i was wondering if the 22re timing cover was the same was because i have a brand new timing cover i painted a nice chevy red, and if it fts, i'll throw that one on and degrease and paint the dirty on in the meantime.

SO, will this seal swell up if i drive the truck everyday and get oil circulating around it?
