I recently inherited a pickup from my dad that is older than I am. I've only ever done oil changes on small Honda cars. It's time to change the oil and, while I believe I have located the oil filter, I can't seem to reach it easily. Is there a trick to getting it off?

not on mine there isn't. Getting it from the bottom is a girl dog if its not on a lift. If its on a lift, this is the best way. Getting it from the top is hard, but thats normally what I do. I've also heard you can take off the passenger front tire and have a straight shot, but i've never wanted to try it, so I cannot confirm that.

The truck has a lift kit and rather large tires, so I can crawl under there without a lift. I can access it from the bottom, but it's hard to get the oil wrench in the space it needs to go. I wriggled it in there and some sparks flew, so I'm a little wary of trying again. I can't find a way in through the top with all the wires and hoses up there.

I hate paying someone else for something as simple as an oil change!

ahh, okay. Well see, I never use a lift either, except when I'm doing it in the autoshop at school. But I have never had to use an oil wrench to get it off. I am easily able to get my hand in there from the top, and remove it. Might be worth a shot.

As far as sparking, you must of hit a + wire and ground. Next time maybe watch and see if you are hitting any wires.

Yeah, I did most likely hit a wire. The sun was setting when I was attempting this, so visibility wasn't great. I've retired until tomorrow, when I can see what's going on.

Maybe if I get a ladder to gain a better vantage point I can reach it from the top. Being short isn't always fun, haha.

I was hoping there was some magic trick.

I need to learn a little more about this engine... and all carb engines in general. Are there any good sites that you know of that I can read up about them on?

Search here, there are pages of info on the 22r.

One thing to remember is the 22r and re are the same motor, just the re is FI. Also, the engine design was changed in 1984, so parts from your truck will not work on an 85+ and vice-versa. Everybody has their favorite site, mine is usually right here. If I need to know something simple or I can't find, I just google "22r ___"

Also if you need to know about the truck, ask me, I own an 82, and have the original manual thing that has most of the info you may need.
