22RE pinging on regular-engine problem or do I need to buy 89 or higher?

I am new to the 22RE so I don't know if it needs more than 87. My wife's Corolla (2.2L) runs like a top on 87 but the 22RE pings when I get on it or when I have a bed full of firewood. This is after giving it a top end treatment with Seafoam to get rid of carbon buildup and new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I still have to do the PCV and fuel filter-ran out of time today. If the pinging doesn't go away after the new PCV and fuel filter should I just start buying plus at the gas station or are there other things I should look at?

They sound like sewing machines running perfectly.
It is NOT a quiet motor.

LOL...so in other words they're kind of like a 2F? My first vehicle was a '77 FJ-40. Is the pinging I'm hearing not preignition?

It can happen if your timing is set incorrectly. At least I think that was happening to me when I got my hilux

badfish, i drive a ninety two 22re and it pings like a sob on 87 at 5deg. btdc. I run at 2-3deg. btc and still ping. had my head off not too long ago and not too much buildup. its a high compression motor to begin with (relatively)

i will say though, after re-insulating my harnesses, and a quick drive through the mountains, i didn't notice any pinging. im gunna set to factory timing tomorrow and see what it sounds like. (just got my truck running again)

It definitely sounds like pinging, which I know the sound of from messing around with turbo Volvos with too much boost and not enough octane. I'll check the timing/do a valve adjustment and see where that gets me. In the meantime I'll try 89 and see if that quiets it.

Make sure your timing is set correctly, then check for vacuum leaks or cracks in the intake. This will cause a lean condition & can exacerbate pinging. Also check in the dark with the engine running to see if you're email getting any arcing off the ignition system.
