Any 4th gen owners had the 'stinky cat' TSB done ?

I had mine done and now regret it.

The recalibration of the ECU gave me less low end.

Very noticeable. I asked to have it put back as it was and put up with the
smell and they refuse....

i had mine done, but i haven't noticed any difference in torque output. seems the same to me. you might have them double-check the ecu programming.

I had mine done over a year ago. No difference in mine that I know of / noticed. (except that the smell is gone)

but i do remember reading (here or at t4r.org) about some people who experienced the very thing you're noticing ...

The TSB actually has 2 parts, one is the replacement of the catalytic converter (really what made the stink in the first place), and the reprogramming of the ecu. If you had the TSB done, they should have reprogrammed it at the same time.

Nrgetic,

Have you waited the 50 or 100 miles after having the ecu reprogrammed ? Remember, the ecu will need to "re-learn" your driving habits and styles before you can expect it to return to normal.

Tho it probably doesn't help, I couldn't tell a difference when I got my truck back after the TSB. Of course, it was hotter 'n Hades out when I got it done, so outside of towing an extra ton of weight, I probably couldn't tell the difference.

Is this mod covered under warranty? If not, how much does it cost to get it done? I noticed when I lower my back window for fresh air it smell like sulfer, only noticeable when I punch the gas pedal on the freeway.

It was covered under warranty when I had mine done ... I'm uncertain as to whether it would still be covered under warranty ... but worth looking into for sure.

After I had this done, my fuel indicator REALLY moved!!! It was so bad, I thought I had a fuel leak. Just driving 20 miles would get about 1/4 of a tank movement from the gauge.There was also a lack of power at WOT, but that came back. The needle is still not as accurate as before as far as empty is concerned. The warning light used to come on aroud 330 miles with about 1 to 1.5 gals left in the tank, but now it always comes on around 300 with 3 gals or so in the tank. I can push it to 330 with 1 to 1.5 gals left, but it just doesn't "learn" the correct amount of fuel left. The smell is gone though.

How could reprogramming the ecu and replacing some exhaust parts have anything to do with your fuel gauge? I seriously doubt that there is any connection between the two.

It was about 2 months ago now. The truck is not leaking fuel anywhere, and the miles per full tank is the same, but the needle just doesn't act the same. I can't figure it out either.

I had mine done about 2 months ago also. It was covered under warranty. The TSB is "EG015-04: Excessive Sulfur Dioxide Odor". About the coverage, the TSB states: "This repair is covered under the Toyota Specified Major Emission Control Component Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs
first, from the vehicle’s in-service date."


I did not notice any drop in performance, but did notice I got between 1 and 2 MPG better after the mod. The eggs are gone, but I did notice the smell of burning exhaust components for a couple days after the install (all gone now).

I would not bet against it.

About 10 miles down the road after my ECU reflash, my ABS warning light came on and I lost all electronic functions asscociated with the brakes
... Anti Skid, brake assist, downhill control in addition to no ABS.

They had to run the codes and reset the computer to fix it and the tech said it happens sometimes while you are repgromming the main ECU...go figure.

I could understand other ECU controlled devices, but I would seriously doubt that the fuel gauge is controlled by the ECU.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Except I wasn't down the road more than 100 ft before my instrument cluster started flashing like a playstation. I got roughly the same response as you - that they had to reprogram the ECU again since it didn't "take" on the first shot.

Haven't had a problem since... That was done back in Sept. 04, BTW...
