I use 5th every day on the way to work and can accelerate while in that gear. I must confess though that I've regeared for the 31's and done the Supra MAF upgrade. My hill climb issue is gone and I can run the pass heading east into the mountains in 5th and still gain speed for most of the climb.

5th gear is fine for me, usually go to 5th around 40 and am able to accelerate fine for most normal situations. going big hills it will hold speed.

all stock 86 4 runner.

5th at 40? You must be seriously lugging the engine.

I got up to 90mph the other day and shifted to 5th and slowly dropped back to 85. My dad was just telling me he can't go over 90-95 with a 4wd Taco with 3.4 and auto trans.

I can keep a steady pace of 65 in 5th gear going up some hills. Most of the time I drop ot down to 4th. This is with 4.10s and when I bought the truck it already had 31x10.5 mudders on it, I can't wait to get it regeared to 4.56 and see what it will do.

Lagging 92

ok so im despeate for some help here, I put a new aluminum head, comp 262s cam, all new gaskets, k&n intake, elimanted the cat and did a full exhaust, even opened up the maf and took some pressure off the butterfly. After all of this i definately have more touque, but acceleration is flatter and slower than before. I can barely get above 65, forget fifth gear. So I have a few questions, is there something im missing in the tuning process? it definately feels like a lack of fuel, or ignition retarding. if i cant get this working right i have two other options. I have a chevy 350 sitting with no home, or to convert this motor to the turbo 22ret. Whats more cost effective? Im leaning more towards the turbo, what do i need, cost?

5th works fine unless you are too cheap to regear after putting on big tires. I should know, I drive a heavy 4Runner, often loaded with crap, and I live in a mountain.

I can do about 75 mph in 5th with my 22r. Which runs like a champ by the way. I shift into 5th at about 45, and this is with 32, and the stock tires were about 29s
