got a '94 extended cab truck. i'm wanting to put some speakers in the rear to help out the tiny speakers in the dash. where is a good place to mount some? not sure what size i will get, probobly either 6 1/2" or some 6x9's. i thought about in the little cubby compartments under the rear side windows, but i'm not sure if i'll get rattles. can i just run the power wires off of the front speakers until i get an aftermarket head unit? what would be a good set of speakers for the the fronts? i don't really want to mount any in the doors. i'm clueless about stereo stuff, but i can't stand the factory setup anymore, it sounds like a clock radio!

if u dont mind having a custom box made. you can get 2 8" DD's which sound awesome with 600w each hell just one can be retarted alone

My '93 P/U has 3x5 speakers in the rear cubby's you mentioned, I thought all of them did. Maybe it was an SR5 trim option. I've considered replacing them with something bigger and have been told a 6x9 would not fit though I have seen a photo or two of somebody getting one in there diagonally. A good quality 3x5 or a 6" would probably be the best option.

the 8" box is actually rather small it fit's perfectly 9" sq you can have one shaped to fit most shops will build custom's for 50$ + cost to fiber glass etc. i think mtx makes a sub,amp combo you can stick under your seat not sure on prices.

You can have 6x9 right below the window with some spacers they sell at any stereo shop,I did it to my 93 yota extra cab

that's what i was looking for, think thats what i'll do. is the speaker mounted to a piece of wood and covered in carpet?

My daughter's truck has the same setup. Yes, the speakers are mounted to a piece of wood that is covered with carpet and then just screwed into the plastic. Works good with no rattles. The previous owner also cut holes and mounted 6x9s to the front of the rear seat area where the jack and tools normally go. Looks very clean and also works well. I do need to update the stereo system and speakers tho since whats installed now is fairly old and several of the speakers are blown out. She has door speakers installed too that really need to be redone.

My plan is to put some 6x9s in the front of the storage compartments in the back seat. Just like mentioned above, now that I'm reading it. I already have a pair of 5x7s (I think) in the doors and dont even use the factory 3.5s in the dash anymore. Sounds like a PA speaker at the county fairgrounds.

No, my speakers sit behind what appear to be factory plastic grilles that pop in and out of said cubbys.

My friend and I stuffed some 6x9s into the cubby holes under the rear side windows back in college. It sounded pretty nice and was pretty easy if I remember correctly.

that last post with the '95 is sharp! My 87 doesn't have rear set, only the flimsy shelf that goes across....fixing to do something with audio in mine...hope it turns out at least as well as that one.

These were originally made to fit the cubby's in my 90 excab. I just cut them down to a smaller size to fit the 88.

How did you wire them from head unit? Did you have to buy an amp for them?

My 93 p/u only came with the 4" dash speakers and the head unit did not have rear outputs when I wanted to add more - so in my case I decided to swap out the head unit for a modern one. It was the logical choice since they're not that expensive, WAY better than factory and the new one is a single din unit instead of factory double-din, so I gained more storage space.
Amplifier is another option to get rear outputs.
Simply run your wiring under your upholstery and up behind the interior panel to keep it all hidden.
