Went out and did the tire lift thing.

I spun the tire 20 times and set up my camera to watch the driveshaft markings.. Just as I finished the battery died!! ... waiting for it to charge then I can check it out..

Off topic question here, I need a new hydrolic jack, what rating should I buy?
My crappy 2 ton can barly lift one rear tire ( cant lift both or one front tire)
3 ton?

*edit*

okay, shaft spun around 45.6 (ish) times that that equals 4.56 gears

Heres how I marked the shaft

and this is how much farther I had to turn the tire to get the shaft to line back up with my marking.

Putting in 5.29 gearing shows 2799 rpms @60mph in 5th gear.
Randy's Ring and Pinion web site has a calculator that shows the 4.88 at about 2300 RPM @ 60 miles per hour in 5th. Shows the 5.29 60 miles per hour in 5th at 2585 which is definitely more consistant with what the tac is showing me. That calculator doesn't account for the tranny size though. I have been coming accross more web sites saying that factory 4.88s in 92 did exist, rare but did exist. Who knows at this point. Sounding more and more like I may have to pull the 3rd just to find out for sure. I will try the tire spin one more time to check for a miss count.

Im at 2650 rpm at 60mph, you're at 2600rpm at 60mph.. sounds like you have 4.56 gears, like me.

your speedo is going to be off a little, I dont think these online calculators compensate for that. You would have to use a GPS to get a accurate reading.

You are correct, there where trucks that came with factory 4.88's but that was only truck with 4runners (not sure about trucks) with 31" tires and automatic

Hey, why don't you just pull the front diff cover off and count the ring gear teeth that way? It's not that hard. Drop the cover w/crossmember intact.

these diff's don't have covers. You have to remove the intire 3rd member to get at the ring gear.

1 of these posts is correct, and it isn't the second one.

The front diffs on pretacoma trucks/runners do have a cover that can be removed while the diff is in place.

So, Tacoma trucks don't have a front cover? Yuk. I already don't like the fact the rears (those that apply) don't have'em. Such a pain.....well, in some ways.

Tacos and 3rd gen and newer 4runners have a clamshell type diff, with no cover.

[quote=bugguy68;50614348] I want to see if the 4.88s will make the difference like everyone suggests... quote]

okay... if you want 4.88's THEN GET THEM. Who cares what you had before??? when you get the new gears you can count the old ones when theyre out then sell them or something. there is just no reason to try and figure this out if you want 4.88's.
