Well, the bottom just fell out.....

It's been a rough day. To top it off my rod tap turned into a rod KNOCK. If I keep driving it I'm gonna throw a rod. It's an 86 22re non turbo. I bought some bearings a gasket and rtv today and I'm planning on changing em' out tomorrow. My plan is to drop the oil pan and change em' without pulling the motor. I don't have the time or the money to do it the other way. I was just wondering if anyone had any pointers or warnings before I got started.

hey buddy!

man that sucks...

it's very possible to do it like that; I've done it on other cars in the past

but I would only be concerned about the possibility that the rod end could be out of round now from knocking my motor after 296k didn't knock at all, and the large rod end was out of round still, and had to be line honed by the machine shop for the rebuild... there's also the possibility of crank damage too...

with luck though, the bearing did it's job as the weakest point though and just took the beating and wore down you wont know 100% until you get in there...

it's a messy job no doubt, with the oil constantly dripping down... get one of those big metal drip pans up from Advance Auto for sure, and a bunch of rags, lol

personally, I would only consider it a temporary fix, and plan on a complete tear down or new short block in the next 20-30k miles...

but hell, it could just need some bearings and therefore be a permenent fix; like mentioned, you just wont know till you get that rod cap off

Thanks man. That's what I'm hoping myself. I imagine it'll help regardless. Hows your build coming.
