weird clank! noise from front wheels while in 4WD...
hey yota guys,
my name is chris and i drive a 1994 toyota 4runner 4WD 5-speed 3.fast (lol). anyways, ive been driving this baby for 1 month and i have to say i love it.
well, this weekend me and my bro went to the beach and saw a sand trail leading to somewhere. i was like what the hell lets go for it. put it in 4WD (for the first time since i had the 4runner) and took off. while i was driving some weird noise came from the front two wheels. it was like a clank! sound every rotation the wheel made. clank!....clank!...clank!..i was like is my 4WD broken? this only happens when it's in 4WD...
oh the trail lead to a turnaround where we got stuck. being stuck in sand sucks...but we got out!
i bought this 4runner used and it looks like it went off-roading before. it has a custom front bumper, rock sliders, and a 3"? body lift. anyone had his problem before?

CV axles are your front drivlines to your wheels, may want to have a look under the front on the cv's and see if the rubber boots are cracked or deteriorated. Those boots keep grease locked in to prevent dust/water and excessive wear on em.

pretty sure bet that one or both outer joints are gone. sometimes the boot gets torn or worn and the grease is flung out, which you will notice all over the inner wheel wells!
you should be able to grab the axle shaft and wiggle it quite a bit if the outer joints are broken, youll know how much is too much. get a new set (2 shafts) with the replacement warranty and change them out.
good luck and keep us posted.

Could be the inner outer spindle bushings also. If it is, should be able to move in out in relation to wheel and hear same noise. If you should have to put new shafts in, might as well replace bushings also.
FSM has a technique to measure if bushings are bad to determine for sure.
