the 3.0 is definatley a bipolar engine, sometimes it feels like it has power, and sometimes you can barely make it up a hill. but i think if you get the headgaskets done, it can be just as reliable as the 22re if taken care off, i've had myne for 20,000 miles, and shes gettin ready to roll over to 160,000, and shes not burning any oil at all yet. (knock on wood) but whatever, the 3.4 is definatley goin in after she blows, but its not soo much for the power issue, its more cause i want the better mpg.

I've had both engines, and IMHO, the 22RE is a much easier engine to work on. For example, adjusting the valves on the 22RE takes me about 20 minutes with simple hand tools, but with the 3.0, you'll need to first remove the air plenum, which can be a chore in itself, before you can even get at the valves. And then there's the issue of getting shims in and out of the valve train. Having said all that, my next truck will have a 3.4 in it.

I've had both as well, 88 4Runner with a 22RE; truly an underpowered motor for the 4Runner -- unless you put in a cam, o/s valves, header, and K&N. I put 400 thousand KM on it without any engine work to it -- timing chain isn't considered engine work in my opion. Like others have said its reliable and easy to work on -- however, after the modifications that I had done it was just as hard on gas then the 3.0L.

I now have a 3.0L in my 90 4WD pickup, and just replaced the motor at 459 thousand KM with a junk yard motor. I didn't have the time to try or the knowledge to try a conversion to the 3.4L, so putting back the 3.0L was the best choice. Thus far I've noticed that the 3.0L isn't a engine that is very good on gas, but the torque over the 22RE is definitely a bonus. They have had a bad rap because of headgaskets and burnt valves -- but WITH proper maintenance the 3.0L is just as reliable as the 22RE without a dought.

Having said all this, If and when this motor decides to puke; I'll probably attempt a conversion but I'll to compare the cost/time vs. a replacement 3.0 again. All in all you can't go wrong with both of these engines, they are but VERY reliable.

Cheers,

i didnt buy a 4wheel drive 4runner to go race my friends that have 5.0 mustangs. it gets me there in just the right amout of time, cuz you know how it always is, you catch up to them at the next light and your back to the start.

i can still get sideways in my truck (when it rains) and i can spin my tires (in mud and when it rains)
I agree with this. My 3.0 is treating me real well. With proper care, it will go on an on. I do agree that I do see a power loss in going up hills. But I didnot get this rig for drag racing. It gets me where I want to go everyday. And I do 100 miles a day, every day

I hear a ton about the 22r,re,3.slow and the 3.4 but how does everyone feel about the 4.0 in the new trucks. Im sure its harder to work on but the power is so good its uncustomary of a toyota.

I appreciate all of the feedback on this. The reality is that I would not be much a daily driver, but more of a reliable off road vehicle. So I just want to make sure that I buy an engine that won't crap out on me. I will take you replies into consideration.

Everyone seems to dislike the V6. The torque vs horsepower is the whole issue. the V6 is way better
by far.

Yes, the V6 has more torque, and for a primarily off-road truck that may be all that matters. My big complaint with the 3.0 is that the power/mileage ratio is WAY out of whack. I bought the 4Runner cuz I wanted better mileage than my '96 Impala SS (~300 HP). It gets about the same (sometimes worse actually) and can't get out of it's own way. I guess, if I'm gonna get 16 MPG on a good tank, I want to be able to light the tires at will. OR if it's gonna be a dog, I want to get 20+MPG.

Every other engine mentioned here hits the power/mileage ratio.... and all of them (including the 3.4L) leave more space in the engine compartment than the 3.0L.

The couple weeks I had my brothers running it wasn't bad as far as power. It would light the tires up pretty much at will at lower speeds. It is a reg. cab 3.0 with the 5 speed. It is a huge bastard to work on though. Just thinking about it puts me in a bad mood.

LOTS of good input here.... I'm actually considering going from a 5vze to a 22re... EZ to work on, of course, Don't expect FAST hill climbs, and you can't pull a cattle trailer with it...

Going from 5vz to 22re? Why? The cost and logistics of the mess would be....silly at best.

What do you mean by burnt valves on the 3VZ?

3VZE's HAVE GOOD POWER WHEN YOU FIT EXTRACTORS, ADVANCE THE DIZZY A FEW DEGREES AND RUN IT ON PREMIUM UNLEADED!!!!!

I have got 485km's out of one tank of my runner, i had spare fuel on board incase i ran out, but i didnt, i just filled it up so as not to suck up too much junk into the fuel pump, when i went to refill it, it only took 58litres indecating it still had some 7litres left in the tank!

I dont know how to convert 485km's into mph, can someone do this?

Yes. Even my new truck with the 4.0 has so much room, I could hide a basketball in there. Well, almost. I love the oil filter placed right next to the battery. Just grab it, spin it, off it comes!

I have owned a 3.4, 3.0, and now a 22RE. By far the 3.4 is my favorite. It has about the gas mileage as the 22RE, but it's WAY faster. A close second is the 22RE. Good gas mileage, fairly easy to work on, and super reliable. Now the 3.0. As slow as the 22RE, horrible gas milege (10-13mpg), and although I haven't seen any proof of it first hand, other people seem to question their reliability the most. Oh, and the two 6 cyl engines were auto, my 22RE is manual.
