I put the head and timing cover on before putting the oil pan back in and now there's not enough clearance with the engine jacked up to put slide the pan over the steering tie rod. I had the head off when I took it out, and I was able to jack the engine a little further up, but now the head hits the firewall. I need about one more inch.

So.......

Now I'm trying to remove the steering rod, and the castle nuts are off, but I can't break any of the bolts free from the rod. Never done this part before, am I doing it right? More power behind the cheater bar?

Use your leveler if you have one. It took me a try and a half to get the engine in with both the pan and the heads on, but it was really no problem at all.

Edit: I see what you say now, the engine isn't all the way out, sorry about the mistake.

On a 2WD, the dampener is removed and the idler arm is loosened from the frame, thus providing clearance.

So, did you drop the differential?

No, do you mean jacking up the body to get clearance from the front suspension?

The dampener is down, but I removed the castle nuts from where the tie rod attaches and I found that I can't get the tie rod free from the bolts that it attaches to. I tried using a bar to pry one end, and I can feel the tie rod begin to move, but it doesn't feel like it's breaking free. It's like there's a joint that must be taken apart from the back side or something. I can post a picture tomorrow of what I'm in to.

I'm having to figure this out as I go because I don't have access to a manual.

I have internet, but no book. Go figure.
