Truck ticking / timing Chain

1987 Toyota 4runner
22re 5 speed
4X4

For awhile now I've noticed my truck has been ticking a lot . So I figured I'd adjusting the valves.I did, except when It came to turning the engine 360 degrees to adjust the other set they were still tight. I did what the instructions said in the manual . Can anyone shed some light on this ?

I was thinking that some of the ticking noise could be coming from the timing chain . It seems loose . I have a pic though . does it look too loose to you ?

You are making sure that the crank pulley is turning the 360 degrees right, not the cam gear?

In my personal experience, the timing chain seemed to make a bunch of noise right during startup. Do the guides look worn? Do you have any maintenance record to go by?

Yes ,I'm spinning the crankshaft 360 degree so that the notch on the pulley and the the 0 line up .From what I've read in the book ..it states to adjust the 1,2,4,6 set of valves first and adjust to specs, after that rotate the crankshaft 360° until the marks line up again.Then the adjust the valve 3,5,7,8,... my prob is that the valves 3,5,7,8 stay tight no matter how much I turn the crankshaft. Can any one tell me if I'm doing something wrong ?

I haven't really inspected the guides . I should of looked while the valve cover was off,but they could be worn , that must be the reason the chain feels loose. and about the maintenance record ,there really isn't one , I know that the previous owner had a new head and head gasket installed.

I'll bet it's the guides. Looks like you have an excuse to pull off your valve cover again, maybe paint it up some crazy way while your at it??? I'd really like to see an 'urban-camo' valve cover paintjob... Hehehe. Best of luck!

If they are all tight no matter what the only thing I can think of is that the last person that did the valves adjusted them way to tight?

Yeah it's possible , but If I go to loosen it up . I 'm afraid it will cause problems when I go to start it. when I go to turn the crank shaft 360 degrees after adjusting 1,2,4,6, Is the valves 1,2,4,6, supposed to be tight ? and 3,5,7,8, loose? Thanks for your help man .

you are grabbing the rocker right? not the valve spring or the valve? Let me look in my fsm and see!

Either 1,2 Intake and 1,3 Exhaust or 3,4 intake and 2,4 exhaust should be loose at one time!

try turning it a small amount and check to see if the rockers are loose until you make a full turn? Does the shiny link on your chain line up with the mark on the cam gear at any time?

Do you think I should , turn the crank shaft so the number 1 cylinder is at to tdc then make sure 1,2,4,6 are loose then turn another 360 degrees and adjust 3,5,7,8 to specs? That's the only think I can think of doing .

yeah thats what I meant, I wasn't thinking clearly and I was going by the cylinder and not the rocker arm number sorry! What you have is exactly what I am looking at, I must be a little tired!

Yeah, that would seem to be the only thing that makes sense if those are loose and you rotate 360 and the others are still tight they must be overtightened. Anyone else have a thought?

Yeah , it sounds like a plan .I'm guessing somethings wrong because I started to set the timing the other day to 5 Degrees(even tried the T and e1 terminals shorted out .).. so I did and I went down the road for test drive ... but the truck didn't have any power ... So I guess I'll adjust the valves again tomorrow ,and then adjust the ignition timing. and see what it does.
