Transmission what will fit???

I am new to Toyotas so please help. I just picked up a 1986 4Runner 22RE 5sp 4X4. The tranny wont go into 4 gear. It just grinds. I have pulled out the tranny and am looking to put in a used one. What years and transmissions will fit my 4Runner. Thanks

Welcome to the world of Toyotas(good choice). Any thing from 85-88 will fit as long as it is from a fuel injection(22R-e) truck. or an 84 4 Runner with injection. 89and newer will fit but you have to cut the floor boards as the shifters come through in a different place and you need the matching transfer case. If you really get lucky 86 and 87 turbo trans will fit and are a bit stronger but good luck finding one. Or rebuild yours, not to hard to do. There are rebuild kits on E-Bay. Good luck, Pete

Thanks for the info. I live in San diego and I thought it would be easy to find a used one. I am not having much luck. I suppose a V6 trans won't bolt up to a 22RE. Is their any markings on my trans to identify it?

I would search threads here for the different variations of the W56, the tranny you have. If that doesn't turn up much go to www.marlincrawler.com and search there as well. He's pretty much the tranny/t-case guru and I know I've seen some good threads there explaining the difference in lengths between the various transmissions. You should be able to find a used one for $200-300, but you may have to be patient.

No, a V6 won't bolt up to a 22R. UNLESS you can find a bellhousing from a turbo truck. There are a few main series of transmissions
The R series (R151 in the turbo trucks, R150 in V6 trucks)
W56 in non turbo trucks
older G series in some older trucks.

W and G series bellhousings (and transmissions) are more or less interchangeable.

You can swap the bellhousings around on the R150, and R151, so as long as you have an R151 (turbo 22R) bellhousing, you van bolt either an R151, or R150 up to the 22R-E.
