Tranny pieces

Well this is disturbing. Drained the oil out of the tranny I just put in my 86 and found this stuck to the drain plug.

It was a craigslist special that was supposedly in great shape when the truck was parked, yada yada. Does anyone that has rebuilt one of these (its a W56 I believe) know where these pieces came from? Is it stupid even trying to drive it? I have the engine all tore apart and waiting on a new head so it's gonna be sitting for a while anyway...

Alrighty. Seeing as there's no takers, I'll take a stab at 'er then.

It appears as though you've found the snapped off shaft end of either:

a. The shift arm shoe(PNC 33225)
b. The reverse shift head(PNC 33231)

And either:

a. The e ring for the reverse shift arm(PNC 33221B)
b. The e ring for the reverse shift head(Part # 96160-00600, replaced by 90082-61005)

Is it stupid to even try driving it? I don't know how stupid it would be. But somehow I don't think it's going to work out too well for you if you do. At very least you'll probably experience a bit of difficulty with driving in reverse. These are just my best guesses though. I could be entirely, or partially, wrong on all accounts. Since I've never been inside a W56 before.

Good news is, if I'm right, most of those parts are fairly cheap to replace. I don't know how easy they would be to replace though.

Shift arm shoe ~$14.00
E ring(either one) ~$2.00

Bad news is, if it's the reverse shift head(PNC 33231), you're probably not going to be able to find it. I can't locate it being sold anywhere online. Part number for it is either 33231-22020 or 33231-22011(not sure which). Neither part # can be found for sale.

Good luck my friend. I wish you the best on this. Sorry to be the bearer of what might turn out to be bad news for ya. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

This is my unlucky project so you're probably right. However, I hadn't really thought that pin was broken off. It has nice round shoulders on both ends so I thought maybe it just fell out of "somewhere". But I'll take a closer look at it when I get a chance. Your guess is logical tho when I that that nice breakdown diagram. Now would that affect the way it feels when I shift it or will it feel like it's doing the right thing when it's not? I've never been inside a manual tranny yet, maybe this'll be my first. Thanks a lot for your input, MudHippy!

Sure thing. No problem at all(for me that is).

I looked at the diagrams in the FSM first to get some idea what it might be. Here's that: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...31componen.pdf

Then at the PNC diagrams over @ toyotapartseast.com for a better look. Here's the other one of those that's relevant:

That covers all the internal components as far as I can tell. Those 2 diagrams don't show the transmission case, the extension housing, or the shift lever and retainer. But none of those diagrams show parts that resemble what you've found. But that's what they're called if you want to look at the diagrams they have for them. Maybe you'll have more luck finding the mystery piece(s) on your own.

And I wouldn't know for sure what would happen with those parts missing. Your guess is as good as mine there. I have tore apart my manual tranny before, but it's not a W56. It's an R150F. And I don't recall if it has any similar looking parts in it or not. Much less what they would be good for. But I just took a quick look at the diagrams for it and I don't see anything like what's in your W56. The internals look completely different from what I can see.

Again, good luck! I'm pullin' for ya!
