shot rings are definetely a problem but they are not causing that shudder. I've got an 89 4wd 22re doing that exact same thing. the rear ujoint had a TON of play in it- half inch or so. fixed that but that didn' solve the shudder.
Now I found the front right half shaft has an inch or two of play where it meets the diff housing. I'm thinking thats it.
If not, I also willl bet TPS
If your broke like I am, don't worry about the rings- just keep adding oil. Your rod bearings will go long before your rings cause anything more than a little blue smoke.

yeah, thats a use for it...the other is when your topic goes unanswered for a while and moves down in the recent topics list...also known as TTT or to the top.
oh, and how are your wheel bearings? when mine went, it caused a shudder and a grinding noise.

On my Rx7 is was a high pitched whistle... on Volks it was a kind of whine.
Haven't had one go out on my Toyotas.
I think it depends a lot on the bearing design... I've had hydro generator bearings go (they run 24/7) with a kind of metallic grind if left long enough, earlier they also whistle.
You can picture whats going on, initial metal to metal is a light contact... high pitched whine... as the wear goes longer, scoring is deeper... and grinding sound results.
One clue I had last time this happened (front bearing) was that the sound was a function of wheel speed, but also would change pitch/loudness as wheel loading changed on corners.
