Tire Sizing ?'s

It's time for new tires on my 93 p/u.

I want to keep them stock size (225 75 15) but I want to know if I can go wider?

My main point is to keep them stock circumfrance with a wider stance. do they make em? and what would the size compute to?

Thanks

Brendonv

i have a 95 4WD p/u. it's a bit higher up than the 2WD. cause you have the 225 75 15's i think you probably have the same 7x15 steel wheels i had.

i kept the wheel at 15" but got some cragar 8" black wheels. look nice, and for $35 apiece.

i measured the michelin 225's i had on it and they were about 29" high, not exactly cramming the wheel well. I got some Yokohama Geolandar M/T+ in 31 x 10.5 x 15, and theyre awesome. Truly epic 4x4 tires. They also make them in LT sizes (225, etc). check at http://www.yokohamatire.com/TireIntr...reID=100&ID=lt

and, if you make them wider, naturally you cannot keep the stock 225. just FYI. time to move up to some proper rubber!

cheers!

I like to use two tools for this. First, the tire and gear calculators at http://www.4lo.com. Second, the tire database at http://www.tirerack.com. If you go to a 70 aspect ratio, 245/70R15 would be pretty close, but Tirerack only shows two tires in that unusual size, and neither of them are attractive for off-road use. I would never use anything lower than a 70 aspect ratio tire on a 4x4 that will be used off the pavement.

If you really need wider tires, your best bet is probably to move up slightly in diameter to a 235/75R15. FWIW, you would be surprised how far those 225s will carry you. In anything but the most extreme situations (deep mud, soft sand, BIG rocks), keeping the truck moving is more about technique than tire size.

225mm is the width. 75mm is the percentage of the width that equals the sidewall. 15 is the wheel diameter in inches.

If you want a wider stance just go more tire width (i.e.235,245,255) and less ratio (i.e.70,65,60) and see if anyone offers a tire in that size. If not calculate out a new size.

Tirerack.com is good for that kind of thing. They'll list all sorts of tires and available tire sizes along with the specs. Go there if you can't do the calculations and do a search by tire size.

If you want the same height, but wider, get a 235/70/15.

Try this tire size calculator to see what different metric sizes measure out to in inches: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
