my regular 22r "valve train" noise is starting to get louder and kinda concern me, its allways made this noise from day 1, kinda sounds like timing chain hitting the timing cover, but last time the head was off, the guides were fine, plastic...but fine, and i adjusted the valves a lil while ago, to .10 exhaust and .06 intake to try n quiet the noise down to no avail.... so if you gots a youtube vid of when your truck blasted the timing guides post em up, it would be helpful

searched youtube and here but didint find anything, you know how that goes

I highly doubt its a fuel pump.

The best way to check the guides is to remove the valve cover, and check the drivers side chain guide for movement or looseness. Thats the one that breaks first, every time. If its intact, you have had a bad tensioner OR if you used an aftermarket tensioner, it will do that.

what happens on these motors is the guides will break, or wear through, and the chain will start to wear 2 grooves on the head and down the timing cover. I've seen it multiple times.

Most of the wear is on the timing cover, but you are right it sometimes nicks the head. Eventually the timing chain will wear through the thin timing cover behind the water pump, and water will seep/drain into the crankcase. We all know what water and oil mixed makes.

I don't have a video for you but I know when my timing chain was slapping the cover on my old 86, it was an extremely loud metallic rapping noise that lasted for a few seconds on every startup. At first I thought it was rod knock but a mechanic pointed out to me that it was the timing chain. Now, I'm not sure if it sounds that way every time or if there are lesser degrees that a chain/guides can fail and if the sounds will be much less noticeable but, I drove it like that for a year and 24K miles before it finally wore through the cover and I was using coolant.
P.S. There is a lot of videos on Youtube referencing timing chain noise and such but I haven't found any that sounded like mine did.

Just because your guides look good, doesn't mean your chain is good.

I just changed the T chain set on my 89, and the chain was flat wore out. The guides were in all most new shape, but the PO buggered up one of keys on the crank, and wouldn't let the oil pump drive gear come off, so they left the old gear on and put the rest of the T chain set on. The old gear killed the new chain in short order it looks like. The guides looked all most new, they were not broke or worn at all. The tensioner was all most fully extended and the links in the chain were extremely loose.

The engine sounded like it had a rod going.

i would just pop the valve cover and take a look. doesn't take long and you will find out right away without guessing

yeah i had to jump the timing, it was off a tooth, it would run but had to be fully retarded, but my truck kinda sounds like the sec vid just quieter, it goes away under very light throttle, somwhere 1500 ish, but if im accelerating and holding a low gear to pass it gets loud like 3800 ish, the P.O stated it was rebuilt about 12k before i bought it, and was rebuilt with a cam, but like stated above i dunno what kinda shade tree stuff was done to it, may have re-used the old chain or somethin... i was too busy trying to put it back together i dont remember taking to great of a look at the chain/ sprockets, i guess ill live with it for a while, and order a timing set from engbldr and see if that helps. thaks guys def appreciated

It sounds like the chain is flailing around in there and making contact with metal to me

yeah me too, i checked the tension and it seems kinda loose, but then again the tensioner only works when its on right?

No, the tensioner has a spring, it should keep some tension even when not running. If you put a long screw driver down the drivers side, how far can you move the chain off the guide toward the passenger side of the engine?

How tight are the links? Grab a link with side plates and try to move it front to back of the truck. If they have play, the chain is worn.

sadly i just moved the pass side, this afternoon, it moved about half an inch....towards the pass side.......i guess tmr ill try movin it around more n take some pics..

If you can, try and get about half way down the guide, or your best guess at half way. Take note of how thick the drivers guide seams to be. Check the links on the chain toe. See if there are any groves wore on the head as well.

Even if your in for a new T set, don't worry, it's not that hard.
