hey this might be a stupid question, but do new cam shafts come with new bearings for them?

LC doesn't mention anything about them...

or is there technically no bearings to speak of? does it just run on the the head and the caps keep it in place? that's what I'm gathering from the FSM...

also, I just realised something... I'll have to remove the head bolts in order to remove the cam... would this be safe to do and keep the old head gasket, or should I plan on replacing the head gasket too?

Aren't you NOT supposed to use FIPG on the VC?

oh, lol, I was like

I have in the past and never had problems

plus, I reused the one that was on there to begin with, and it's gunna get replaced when I do the timing chain anyway, so I'm not worried about it...

it doesn't leak right now, so screw it

If you laid it out all ghay-like, pieces could chunk off and fall INSIDE your engine. Then they could get stuck in a valve spring or somewhere else...make their way down to the oil pan....clog the filter, get stuck in a main bearing or something. Clog an oil passage.....

I jest went through what you are going to go through. RTV sucks. FIPG I have heard is pretty good stuff. I would recommend not using either except on the 4 points called for in the TSM. Even then I would try to get some of the toy stuff. I used permatex black and it leaked right away. Right now I am getting some of the toy FIPG and re-doing the whole thing with homade teflon gaskets (I'll let y'all know how well they work, I am going to cut them on a vinyl plotter). I had fudged the pass side black gasket on assembly which is what sparked the idea for teflon=reuseable.

Hmmmm, in that case I probably wouldn't worry about the cam then. If your gonna pull the head off(that includes all the intake stuff...) to do the head gasket then why not take the head in to get machined, but then what about the block? You could probably redo the rod bearings too, it's just going to be a pain. Etc, etc...I dunno, I going off my personal engine shenanigans. I had all the money I needed at the time, by chance, and I went all out for the overhaul. However, I saved a little because I did all the "muscle" work myself and all ready had new compenents installed.

Basically, I would only do the timing chain and front end stuff. I would(like you said) drop the oil pan(have fun with that on stock ifs) to clean out the pan and check the bottom end. IMHO!!!!

good point...

but now I'm thinking a HG wouldn't be a bad idea anyway. as far as I am aware of, the head has NEVER been removed from the bock, so the HG has 295k on it!

a new good HG and a new set of bolts would be good assurance

plus I wouldn't mind taking a look at, and probably cleaning the underside of the head, and the top of the pistons, after the nastyness I found in the intake a long time ago:

I can only imagine what the combustion chambers must look like

Holy bajinkers! Thats dirty. ^^

Why do the HG if you are going to put a new engine in when you run this one into the ground?

Eeewwww, that's gross!!! Looked like mine did!!! lol!

Ok, then. Well, if you take the head off to replace the gasket you can deffinately check the rod bearings for wear. I think I have a video some where of when I did mine. I don't think I can embed a photobucket video though. Anyways, once the head is off, take a piston till it's flush with the top and then a wee more. Use the butt of a mallet and push down on the piston. If it clunks or even slightly tinks, you might have a rod bearing issue. Again, that's just what I've seen on MY motor and that was after I spun a rod bearing on the #1. The machinist said the motor looked very clean other than that. I suspect yours is in WAY better shape than mine was, other than the carbon build up!!

alright, so, here's what I think I might be peicing together from LCE

Complete gasket set:

http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...0-98F82008809E

this will give me ALL of the gasket I need and them some, PLUS the rear main which needs to be replaced too

Single row timing chain kit with metal guides:

http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...4-69F9E446E60D

obviously, the main reason I'm going to be doing all of this

LCE's Pro Oil Pump:

http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...6-602D41D835AA

never hurts to have the extra flow

Pro/Street Performer Cam - Offset:

http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...A-58B44B30DF84

Just cause a little extra grunt wouldn't hurt the ol 22re

Looking at a total of $654.80 right there to repair and upgrade the ol girl

that of course doesn't include tax and shipping, or any other little odd and ends I find once I get to it

what do you guys think?

Looks like more than enough stuff!! Hey, not to throw more stuff on the pile, but I would also check over you engine mounts. My passenger side was in great shape, but the drivers side was completely seperated and deteriorated!! The dealerships wants $150 for new mounts FYI.

Also, I would DEFINATELY call LCE and do this order over the phone, might save you some change by making it a package deal and all. I'm just saying! Other than that, looks like a project!!!

I was looking at the mounts yesterday, and they're both actually in really good shape

but yeah I'll probably call them up tomorrow after work; thanks for the tip!
