Hello everybody. Had a couple of quick questions. I have an 86 4runner I just picked up and am working on. I ordered the timing chain kit but did not see a gasket. Was wondering if there is a gasket or is everybody just using rtv. Also I had an 87 p/u before and the gas pedal was no where as stiff as this one. Is that normal. Sorry 22re.

The t/c has a gasket but your supppsed to rtv it as well your also supposed to replace the head gasket when you do it.
You might have some dirt or rust some where making it stiff as long as it doesn't stick you should be alright

IIRC it does have a gasket, but plenty of RTV or even better Toyota FIPG is also necessary for sealing it up. Don't skimp and leave the head on - I tried that and like many others had issues with the HG interfering and causing a leak later on. Take the head off and do it once, do it right.

for stiff gas pedal, try cleaning out your intake manifold, especially the butterfly. mine was stiff and felt like it might stick someday - looked inside and it was all black and not happy looking. got in there with some cleaner and a toothbrush (didn't even take it apart/off the engine, just the hose off and went in from one side) and never had an issue since then.

Well, motor has 200,000 miles and was going rebuild next summer. If I'm going to have to take the head off maybe I should just pull motor and rebuild now. Thanks for all the replies. Engnbldr here I come. Lol

You do not necessarily need to remove the head. I did my timing chain without removing the head, the only downside is you'll need to loosen the oil pan bolts so you can install the cover with out messing up any of the gaskets.

As for the sticking gas peddle does your cable look rusty? If so I'd spray wd-40 down there and also like what highonpottery said it could be a dirty throttle body.

"Toyota" specifies that you remove the cylinder head and the oil pan for timing chain cover removal.

But the timing cover can be removed all day long without removal of the cylinder head or oil pan.

You just have to take care in re-sealing.

If you plan on rebuilding the engine anyway... it may be best to wait do it all at once and be done.

Sticky accelerator pedal...

Clean throttle body. If throttle body cleaning does not remedy... then a faulty accelerator pedal cable will be the cause.

However..^

-Be sure to check and make sure accelerator cable and pedal assembly is not damaged or restricted/pinched against something.

I was hoping to drive it through the winter. Has loud ticking noise and when I went to adjust valves I saw the guide was completely gone and rub marks on the cover. So I can try and move up the rebuild or try to do it without removing head. Ill take it to my friends garage and decide I guess. Need to put it on the lift to remove oil pan to clean it out anyway. I'm sure that's where all the guide pieces are and that cant be good
