starting problems & idle

Hello all!

Background info: I just got this...'86 22re, 71k, new plugs/wires/cap/rotor/air filter. afm at stock setting, Timing set at 5btdc. one engine code (11--switch?). pacesetter header (previous owner). LC engineering cam sprocket set 3 degrees advanced. it looks like the TPS has been messed with in the past. aftermarket coil. no fuel in the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. it's a toyota based rv. that has decent power (75 on the flats with 5500lbs on it, 55 uphill), 17mpg loaded.

The Te1/e1 diagnostic jumper does not affect the idle when the engine is on.

I've got a couple issues with this beast.
1. it's hard to start when it's cold. it had been doing this only when it was hot, but it just switched on me the other day. it just cranks and then after 5-10 seconds it starts up with a bit of a sputter to it. then it's fine. it restarts well if it hasn't sat for too long, but if it's been warm and sits for 10 minutes, then it cranks and cranks and finally turns over.

2. it idles great when it's cold, then when it warms up it starts to miss. i did a seafoam treatment and it's better, but definately not 100%.

3. there is some pinging/slap? coming from the 3rd or 4th cylinder. i just adjusted the valves (.007/.011 cold). how can i figure out what's causing it?

any thoughts?

Some more info, perhaps it will help someone help me.

i pulled the plugs, no gas on them...no leaky injectors. Throttle body is almost entirely clean. when it does start it's pretty rich. tested w/another battery and it starts the same.

what gives with the starting issue?

First thing I would check is the water temp sensor for the ECM, in green below.

now not starting!

Thanks.

I've had a very related issue (I think it's the real problem) that's happened 3 times in the last 2 weeks. it will not start. If i put the key in or stomp the brakes or turn on the radio (anything to draw a current), there's no current (no clicking, no crank, all the lights go out, etc). the entire electrical system dies.

I put in a new battery last week, but it's dead as of today from all of the cranking. My guess is the alternator or the ignition switch, but I only have a TPS code(11). It seems that it has to be coming from somewhere between the battery and all of those systems that cause it to not to work.

i towed it 30 miles home night (oh so miserable), and tried to pop start is a few times, with absolutely NO success.

more ideas?

ok. new battery cables and it has power all the time. that problem is fixed.

new coolant temp sensor today. still has the same starting issue.

the big problem is still that it's super hard to start. It seems fuel related within the starting system, hot or cold (crank crank crank, sputter sputter, catch, rev to life). where do I start? starter? cold start timer? c.s. injector? fuel pressure regulator? fuel pump? fuel filter?

i have an 85 manual which should be good for the 86 and the resistance values are different than the 93 values for the cold start time switch. the injector values are the same. on the switch the STA and STJ values are 20-40 ohms with coolant temp below 86 degrees F. and 40-60 ohms with coolant temp above 104 degrees F. the ohms for the STA to ground are between 20-80
