'splain me differentials, 2nd gen 4runner

I have a 94 4runner 5spd v6 w/ADD, The front diff is probably bad - it has a 1/2 inch hole in the lower front casing, cant tell if something hit it or of something escaped- it was that way as I bought it. So no 4WD at this time.

So my plan is to get it fixed, I can get used diffs (4.56) in my area. But what would I have in stock form - Open diff? Limited slip ?

I think I understand aftermarket lockers but I want this thing to do some light to med duty crawling - nothing extreme just some southern Utah type tours.

Looking for some advise from the forum before I talk to the shops.

Thanks!

stock you'd get open diffs. get a picture of the hole you're describing, it may just be a plug or sensor missing.

Oh, it's a "not supposed to be there" type hole. I just don't know if the whole diff is bad or if the carrier case just got punched.

So here are my assumptions (I may be wrong)
1. When shifting into 4WD I get a click from inside the dash - but no 4WD indicator lights come on in the dash. And of course the fronts won't spin.
2. The ADD system will not work/engage without oil in the front diff.
3. Oil will not stay in a carrier with a hole in it.
4. I'll pop the front carrier case off, but prolly won't be able to recognize a problem.
5. Replacing a front diff is not an easy task for a novice.
6. An aussie (or like product) in the rear will help me keep up with an FJ in most cases.
7. Pull out my wallet.

5. I replaced both my front and rear in a couple of hours having never done it before. It's easier than you think. These trucks are easy to work on, really.

6. Aussies are the bomb baby!

most problems usually start with a problem and end with a wallet. the in between stuff is what changes

*laugh* Most problems here start with someone buying a Yota then logging on to Yotatech and thinking...... "I wonder what I need to wheel this thing.".

It's all downhill and deep pockets from there.
