I'm new to this forum and just purchased my first Toyota, a '91 4runner, 3.0 5sp. Thanks to this forum, I'm learning a lot about my vehicle. I need to replace the speedometer cable, would like to do this myself. My question is this, will I have to disassemble the dash to un-clip the cable from the speedo housing? Also, is it a bayonet type connection? The shop wants $150 to $180 to do the job. I used to think that parts for my Fords' were pricey, that is until I bought this Toyota! I'm still looking for the gold that must be embedded in every Toyota part! Anyhow, I'd like to do as much of the repair and service work as possible. Got to replace the radiator as well, that seems to be the easiest R&R on the whole rig!

If you are going to do it yourself, take heed of a couple of warnings.

I've never found an aftermarket replacement for the V6s (NAPA, Pepboys, Carquest, Autozone, ect.) The factory replacement for my truck was $85 at the dealership.

The E-brake cable runs through the firewall plate that is part of the speedo cable. The way I ended up doing mine was to disconnect the E-brake cable at the pivot under the truck, then pulled all of that through to the cab, and then fed it back through the new speedo cable assembly.

Taking the driver's side of the dash apart will make your life a lot easier in this process, as it will afford you much better access to everything.

All in all, the prices you quoted to get it done don't sound too bad, to me.

Thanks for the reponse guys. Breknraj, I picked up a cable from toyota, $96. I'm debating on taking it to the dealership, although I'd like to keep some of the money for me...I'm also replacing the radiator. Have to see what the weathers' going to do. Nothing I hate worse than wrenching in the cold, cold tools, plastic parts break easily, simple jobs become harder 'cause you can't seem to get your cold fingers around that little conector way back in there....

If you take your dash apart, on of the screws is under the vent/heater/ac adjustment plate. One finger above the plate under the drink holder and it pops right out. You gotta take the AC button, and the slider switch knobs off first.

The speedo cable is a bayonet style and you will have to separate the instrument cluster from the cable, which I found to be a pain. You'll also need to thread it throught the cab floor and if memory serves me correctly, you may have to pull the emergency brake cable also. I think it took me about 2 hours to do. If the dealer is going to charge you $150, I would have the dealer do it.
