So I made my axle bearing SST

Been looking around on this forum for answers for a while and decided to finally join so I could show off my SST axle bearing puller. Local shops wanted from $150 to 225 for this job, so I bought a press for $150 and made this tool for $40:

Good job on the SST, now all the local Yota guys will be your new best friends.

That's what I did as well, but not so much because of the cost (mechanic friends), more for the having to transport dirty parts 30min one way in my wifes truck.

Nice! Wish I could have gotten my hands on an old axle tube last summer when I did mine. I'll be making one of those in the future, but no rush now. I'm sure once I make it I'll have new friends knocking on my door tho!

I am sure I am missing something here.

But why do you need this special tool ??

Quite a few vehicles with rusted out backing plates.

I have changed a few rear bearings and backing plates and never needed one.

If this helps I am all for speeding jobs up.

Just because it can be done without the SST doesn't mean it should be done that way. I have done it this way in the past! If you are one of the people that smash the axle end into a piece of plywood on the floor, you risk damage to the splines. Consider yourself lucky!

I made mine to so as not to have to do it in caveman fashion. That and I am not interested in manhandling parts apart unless absolutely necessary. I am sure that the OP feels the same way as well.

But to each his/her own, and as long as your way works without damage, keep at'er.

You miss my point !!!!

I have all the tools to do just about anything i need
All sorts of gear and bearing pullers . One does tend to accrue a few tools or the years when in that business

My statement is why is it needed I have had no problems pressing them out or in with the tooling at hand made during the last 30 years or so doing these types of things.

I am not the cave man type when it comes to any type of mechanical things all though I may look like one being half Big Foot.

My question is there a real advantage to having this type of tool and why??

I am always willing to learn

I'm with you, wyo, but it would give me an excuse to bust out my old Thunderbolt.

To the OP, looks great, nice job on the SST.

I made a very similar tool by hacking the end off an old axle housing I had and welding ears on it. Works slick. I bought a cheap press for like $129 5-6 years ago and I can't tell you how many times I've used it. Great tool to have. It's nice being able to do things the right way finally.

If I had a press a tool like this would be very appealing. It looks well executed, kudos on the design.

Wow, your tool looks great. I just did my axle bearings, thought about making a tool, but I figured it would cost me $100 in materials (guess I was wrong there)...so I ended up buying one on ebay for $150...

Wyoming9 - can you elaborate on how you press the axle out of the backing plate without a tool similar to what the OP made?
