Bumper ends are full of rot as well. They will be dealt with once the body rust is treated. Not sure I will remove them, but I have had thoughts of making a fiberglass cast of them to replace the chrome. Fiberglass does not rust. No O/S tires for me, its my DD.

yeah i didn't want to derail this thread too much with that fugly picture of my oil cap....i've saved that thread you linked to my fav's.
the next thread i start will be something like where's the best place to dig a hole for buried treasure or something like that. being check-mated by bills the way we are it leaves no wiggle room for the "like-to's" that we all have.
of course taking apart doesn't cost me anything.....getting it back together the right way may be the expensive part...LOL, wait, no, i shouldn't laugh about it.

So you guys got me so motivated I started on what I thought would be an easy spot....
What I started with -
Sanding the paint off and used a rust penetrate and stabilizer -
Where I am now -
I had to stop because I was losing light. I need to get either 60 grit for my 5" orbital sander or just wait until I get my angle grinder + grinding pads in the mail.

if you can weld .... you know you can get replacements ...
actually , you dont even have to weld them .. one of the members on this board (RobD) epoxied them in ..

The entire panel is not bad. The replacement also says it's metal as well. Would rather save the $150 and just sand as much as I can then bondo/fiberglass.

I think we all have a question or two about POR-15. Will this work as a rust restorer as well as an inhibitor? So if our frames/body panels what ever are rested, just clean them up some get all the loose off and spray? Or doe this just stop things from rusting? Clean it up protect it and then POR it?

from my experiences in POR 15 it stops it from continuing, it doesnt DESTROY the rust, just prevents it from growing any worse.
You don't even have to actually get rid of the rust, you can metal-ready it, then paint or spray the POR-15 on. (i painted it on my jeep frame, came out smooth as glass).
After you POR it, you have to put something over it like paint or primer... The stuff is UV sensitive and fades like crazy if it doesnt A) Get wet or B) Stay in the dark...
If you want an example of the fade i'll go snap a picture of my rear bumper for you.

just what peoe130 said ....
BUT .... you do have to get both sides of what ever your doing .. to be absolutly effictive , because rust is not "loyal" , it works on both sides .

i like doing the body work....engine stuff, not so much.
that's my 13yr old son's truck, still a work in progress, still quite a ways to go. i wish it had a 22re like my truck, but it has the beloved 3vze.....with a ????blown headgasket.....which i equally have no clue how to do and will be getting "on the job training" courtesy of YOTATECH just like what i'm doing with my truck.
