Rod Knocking




Well as much as im ashamed to say it, i kinda got to.

I ran my motor low on oil. I know, stupid, it only takes a second to check.

Anyways on with my situation. Last night i went out playing a lil bit and got in a few good holes. Deep enough that i was revvin the motor pretty high, i started to go in a hole, and had a flashback of last time i went through it, it was deep before i could escape the hole sucked me in. Water was coming in the Pass side and it was tryin to get me lol. My buddy had me hooked up pretty quick, and my intake and exhaust were both out of the water. So i figured i would be ok..

Next hole was pretty deep too. Deep enough the headlights got submerged, but not for long, i made it through there and when i finally got out we continued on, but i was for some reason out of power, it kept wanting to die. Well it would run fine then would try to die, run fine then try to die. So we made it back out to the beginning and i took it done the road, when i came back i revved it up trying to get everything dried out, and thats when i heard a rattle/knock.

I immediately shut it off and checked the oil. Not even on the stick, went to the store picked up a few quarts came back and put 3 qts in my truck. I was blowing oil out of somewhere. Still dont know where, as its not leaking anymore...

Made it home, ok. Had to nearly floor it to get it to take off at a decent rate. but anyways got it home and started to check it out, not much i could do being at midnight so i let it sit till this morning, buddy showed up to give me a hand, and we pulled the valve cover, all the valves look good. nothing bent out of the way, drained the oil. it was good. refilled it and took it over to my father in laws shop. he adjusted my valves and that did help the rattle a lil bit. i still have a knock coming from the motor.

If you rev it a lil bit you can hear it knock,knock,knock,knock,knock, then once it idles down it goes away. when you drive it only at high rpms does it start knocking.

compression check and leakdown will tell you all you need to know. Well, it will eliminate a few things anyway.

and for reference, while the valve cover was off i cranked the truck and it still made the noise, so i know the rocker arms arent hitting the cover or anything.

to me that sounds kinda like a wrist pin. try running it with each one of the plug wires off one at a time and see if that knock goes away or changes.

Ouch, I hate that noise!

Well, you're right it certainly sounds like your bearings are toast. It's full rebuild time, or time to get a different motor.

In high school I had the same problem on my 68 Olds Delta 88 that had a 390 HP Rocket 455; the nylon caps on the timing gear crumbled and clogged the oil pump intake enough to constrict oil flow but not enough to light the oil light. Developed a mean knock after a night of carousing. Bummed me out 'cause I couldn't do this anymore:

i tried but got shocked lol,

i will try again, from the front of the motor, neither 1 or 2 cyl made the noise go away.

wrist pin?

bearings?

either hard to change and could it fix it?

don't pul them when it's running lol. pull one start it and then stop then put that plug on and pull another one and start again. it's a yota it should run on 3 cyls unless one is already dead. then it still might run on 2 !!!

hmmm usually when you have a bad rod bearing and you pull the plug wire it will quiet down. Ah hell maybe its the entire plug and not just the wire. I can't remember.

wont hurt to try it. lol. would be a heck of alot easier for ya if ya had a compression gauge. Either way I do believe it's in the bottom end regardless. only way to be sure is to tear that oil pan off and take a look.

why I had said wrist pin is because it's somewhat intermittent and kinda fast compared to rpm. And I know for a fact what a completely toasted rod bearing sounds like. completely wiped out my #4 a while back and it was A LOT louder than that.

BTW what is your oil pressure doing?

unfortunately I got to go watch my UFC 120. Be back on later.

anything before 84 will have different motor mounts i belive.. but its should pretty much all be the same..
