Question Rear window in 88rnr won't go up/down

The rear window quit working. It won't work with the key or the switch in the center console. This bums me out! Especially considering you need to roll the window down to get the hatch to fold down.

Anybody else have this problem? Is it likely to be the window motor? How hard will that be to replace?

Thanks. This really sucks especially considering this is the time of year when my 4-runner really shines.

Man-o-man.....it could be several things.

There's a bolt with a safety ground for the hardtop. This is so the window will not operate if the top has been removed. I'm not sure offhand which bolt it is....sorry.

It could be the relay board in the body wall behind the driver's seat. If that goes out, power will not get to the motor and neither switch will operate. If both switches stopped operating at the same time, then I wouldn't blame either. Probably the relay board.

To test the motor, you'll have to pull the service panel off the inside of the tailgate. You run two long wires directly from the battery....one hooked to pos. and one to neg.....then, touch the terminals inside the connector at the motor. Crossing the two wires one way will make the window go up, and the other will make it go down. If it does not operate in either case, the motor is bad.

First make sure the window lock button isn't pushed in. Check the top bolt switch, the bolt hole behind the driver side rear tire. Then the wiper position, is it in the right place. Then check the the latch switch. Make sure the back door lock is down.

I was just telling someone about this, it's not really a solution to your problem but:

When I had an '87, I put a switch on the inside of the tailgate to run the window up and down, I did it so when I was camping or whatever, I could just lower the window with crawling to the front and putting the key in and lowering it. It was very nice, and it was wired strait from the battery to the switch to the motor, so it would work with the top on or off, and the tailgate up or down,

Like I said, this doesn't really help your present situation, but if you had a switch like mine, it would make the trouble-shooting much easier,

Does the motor come on at all when you turn the key/press the button? Or does it not do anything at all?

IIRC, ins't there some plastic gear in there that wears out? It's got some funny name, but it's just a plastic gear

And, all of the above posts are good suggestions too!
