Rear End Shaking
Ok so this has been going on for quite a while and i thought that new tires and rims would fix it. My truck is in my sig and its mostly stock.
So here's my problem. At around 55 mph and up my rear end has a really bad vibration/shaking of the whole truck. I know its coming from the rear. Its not my driveline cause it happens up hill down hill and in neutral. I'm thinking it might need aligned or new shocks. The shaking is pretty evident and def noticable to my passengers. Maye the drum is out of balance? i really have no idea.
I dont know really what to do or if this is a common problem amongst toyota trucks. Any help will be much appreciated.

I wouldn't say that's a common problem. Check the bearings for wheel play. Otherwise, possibly you have a bent axle. Or, there's a problem with where the axle rides in the differential.

have you had your tires checked? a lil hump was what started mine i have to replace the tire but non of the used shops have a 33.12.5 it never did it till i put them on good year tells me the tire is separating from the center out

I checked my U-joints and they seem to be fine. Its not the tires since they are brand new KM2's.
I have a feeling it could be the diff. Which i plan on switching to 4.56's here soon.
If the axle was bent wouldn't i be able to feel at lower speeds? Also... are there bearings on the rear wheels? I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. I'm slowly working on getting to know the toyota.

Okay so tomorrow i'm going to the local yank-a-part and looking at what type axles they have. It might end up being easier just to swap the whole thing out if i can find a good deal on one with 4.56's. Do you guys think it could just be the alignment of the rear wheels or the shocks? speak now or forever hold you peace.

Oh yeah.....the rear axle/wheels have bearings. I've never had a bent axle, but it seems highly plausible to me that were it bent just enough you might not notice at slow speeds but you would at high speeds. I have (and do at the moment) had bent axles on bicycles. Don't notice it much until I really get going down a hill or something. Nevertheless, there's some kind of clip that retains the axle inside the diff. I remember one instance where a member's (Lysmachia) axle "clip" came off entirely and the axle went flying off on the highway. They posted pics and everything. I'll see 'bout finding that thread later on this afternoon when I have more time. The rear diff's on these vehicle aren't so easy to just "check" as a Dana axle that I'm more familiar with. On Danas, you can simply pull the diff cover off and look. On these, you gotta pull the diff out of the housing.

Well it def not alignment the only thing that could be out on the rear is your thrust angle, and the only thing that effects is driving straight....If i had to guess based on discription i would say either bent axle shaft, bent drive shaft or u joints.
You can check the axle shaft and drive shaft by placeing the back in the air on jack stand and let the tires spin freely and look and make sure they are spinning straight and make sure you drive shaft is not bent.
P.S.make sure the truck is secure block both fron tires so it will not fall off!!!

what a about your fuild level, too much and it will cause unessary vibration.
to little exsive heat and premature wearing out of parts.. not good...
i would check oil level first

Ok i've pretty much decided on getting a new axle. I need to regear to 4.56 and i dont want to spend the money on regearing only to drive down the road and it still be there. Will the 90-95 4runner axles swap with the pickup? I think there are some spring mounts that i could cut off or something. Also what is the axle code for 4.56's on the 4runner and pickup for all the engines? i think there is a thread around could someone post it up?
Also one thing to note is i took off my canopy and all the 200 lbs of gear out of my bed and the vibrating lessened... could my diff oil level be low maybe too?
i apologize for all the questions as i'm just trying to fix whats wrong.

I had the same problem after a local garage installed a transmission. It was an unbalanced driveshaft. try unbolting yours and turning it 1/2 revolution and bolt it back on.

I would also have your driveline checked.
I know that when i had my front driveline unbalanced, this thing rattled like no other..
Oh yeah, and i once accidentally lleft my hubs locked while in 2wd. I have 4.10s front, 4.30s rear, and going down the freeway itd get this pulsating sound...
So make sure your hubs aint locked.

1. could have some runout in the driveshaft, 2. and i know from expirence look in your mirrors at the rear tires when it shakes, if you can see the tire shaking it can be one of two things, out of round tire, can balance but at high speeds you feel it, and new tires can be out of round too or a bad wheel bearing, jack it up on some stands let it idle in third gear and watch the tires they should be turning perfectly around, you will see if it is out of round, and as long as it is up there grab the tire pull in and out and lift up and down if there is any play at all it is the wheel bearing they can get bad before they start to leak also look at d shaft when it is turning to see if you see any runout. before anybody says anything about this being unsafe, well it is but if you let common sense prevail and use chocks you'll be fine

hey, man i told you already... check you fluid..
drain your rearend.. and observe the color and smell of your 80/90 wt oil
low oil will cause vibration..
step 2 put truck on jack stand and start it up and put it in gear..
be careful.. harbor frieght 3 ton jacks will get the job done..
step 3 take off your rear tires and repeat step step again..
step 4 go to harbor frieght and get a magnetic base dial indicator and check you runout in your drive shaft in a fe different spots..
step 5 if you cant cant afford step 4 use a coat hanger or some wire.. lay under the truck while its in 1st gear. and observe your u-joints and check for a bent drive shaft.
step 6 put your ear or stehiscope up to you rearend to listen to loud nosie vibration...
step 7 tell everyone on here about how much money you saved your self by figuring it out yourself...
