Pickup or 4Runner?

If its an expedition-type rig you want, or you camp with your girlfriend in the back etc, get a 4Runner. If you just want an offroad rig, get a pickup. The light weight probably help it offroad. 4Runners are pretty top heavy, I can personally attest to that as I'm right now painting the passengers side of my truck due to a flop.

It is easier to pack stuff into a pick up than a 4runner.
You can equip a pickup much better for expo travel than a 4runner.
Sleeping in a 4runner sucks if you are bigger than 6 feet.
first gen 4runners do not turn into pickups. They turn into 4runners with no tops. open, wet, and cold in the weather, too hot in the heat, and non lockable.
Get a pickup.

I cant's speak to hard core 4-wheeling... but as snow/camping/hunting/expedition rigs go... I LOVED my extended cab pickup with the small camper shell it was great! When it was just the wife and I + two big dogs it worked perfect.
Wife squeezed out a couple kids and the dogs passed away so the X-cab just didn't work/wasn't necessary anymore. So its the 4runner or nothing for me.

I've had both and I perfer the 4Runner. Since I am a computer tech I can throw all my gear and any computers into the back, strap them down, and hit the road. I love having a large covered area and packing up to go on some light camping trips is simple and easy. It's really on what you think you are going to like more. The 4Runner's are definately top heavy but as long as I don't take any corners too sharp or gun it in curvy areas mine seems to do fine for my aggressive driving.

I like that I can get at the drivers seat from the back in a 4Runner. I really appreciate the 4Runner spring/fall/winter camping. You can run the engine to heat up the truck when you need to. Plus, your stuck is pretty secure. I fish, so I have expensive fly rods and gear.
It also makes sense to me to be able to drive off without getting out of the vehicle- grizzly bear in the camp, drunk trouble-makers, mother-in-law.
From a purely off-road point of view, get the truck. Its less top heavy.
