I've gone from the FULL line on my dipstick to the LOW line in 1 month. Any suggestions to fix this problem? The oil is all over the place (including my garage floor)- exterior of oil pan, front diff, bottom of timing cover, around 4 big bolts on valve cover, around oil cap, all over the inside of the skid plate, pretty much everywhere on the lower half of the passenger side of the engine! Oil filter is clean as a whistle. Truck still runs fine???

I was thinkin the same thing. The stuff on your valve cover looks like the normal seepage I've seen on most 22r series engines.

How can you tell? It was fine a month ago, now all the sudden the garage floor is covered! How do you replace the front main seal (Newbie here)?

First take the crank pulley off then unbolt the oil pump and slap a new seal in its pretty straight forward.

well from the pictures it looks like its coming from the lower part of the front of the engine.

you don't need to remove the oil pump to replace the seal. But it might be a good idea to replace the pump seal while your in there for safe measure.

True, you shouldn't have to if it was a perfect world. But on a couple that i have done you can't get the seal out from the front with a conventional puller so i have had to take the oil pump off and tap it out from the back due to it beeing old and crusty after 200,000 miles or so

It could be, I've had oil shooting out of my timing cover before but it was very noticeable. With the engine running it looked like a geyser of oil shooting out. From your pictures though its most likely the main seal.

This is a pic of the last seal I replaced. It was so worn out it came out with the crank pulley.

OK, so remove the crankshaft pulley and oil pump and replace both seals?

Yea, n if you decide to replace it, first thing, you go ahead and break loose the crank pulley bolt. there are some guys on this forum having problems getting that baby off.

did you or anyone else do the timing cover recently??

mine looked the same as your's. my money (with mine) is that when the timing cover was replace last time they did not "drop" the pan and only loosened it up and did not get a good seal. my front bolts (of the pan to the timing cover) were not tight at all. it was hard to tell where the oil was coming from but just know that there was alot of it.

where do you live? is it too cold to de-grease your engine?

front main?...eh..you say it looks dry...might not be it. check torque specs of the timing cover bolts and oil pan to the bottom of the timing cover.

start off simple.....clean it off and watch for where oil is coming from before you go to the front seal....check the torque of the cover bolts like i said, and maybe drop the pan (yeah, THAT's soooooo easy ...NOT!) and re-seal it with FIPG.

I saw advice once about finding a leak of putting talcum powder on it to "trace" where it's coming from. start off simple.
