Oil pump is toast and metal is everywhere... where do I go from here?

We're planning to drop the oil pan this Saturday. I'll see what goodies are in the bottom of the pan, take a pic, and then post. Hope it isn't going to be too ugly.

Oil pan was dropped and we found aluminum grit on the bottom. Big "thank you" goes out to Eric-the-Red for helping me drop the diff today. 
No turning back now, and I'm hoping my parts from engnbldr will arrive soon.

Here are a couple of pics of the diff drop. It was stubborn, but finally came out after dropping the left lower A-arm. The steering stabilizer was toast.

Hi: New to the forum as of tonight. I wish I saw this earlier. I just had to take my oil pan out due to the screen being totally gummed up and almost siezed my engine. I got the pan out from under my 88 22re 4X4 by taking out the 4 bolts that hold the lower bar to the truck. Then I had to take out the 2 bolts that hold the diff bracket on the driver side. Then I took a pickle fork to disconnect the drag link/pitman arm joint. I then took the nuts off both motor mounts and lifted the engine with a block of wood under the oil pan and placed a socket under each mount to keep the engine up about an inch or 2 when you let the jack down (be sure to use socket sizes that you wont need! 
) Now you have to unbolt the oil pan and drop it down enough to unbolt the pickup tube/sump assy. Remove the sump, then the oil pan will wiggle out between the front of the engine and the radiator. Reverse to re-asemble! Make sue you clean the sump screen...usually you'll see pieces of old timing chain guides!
