if its a 4 speed, it must be an auto right? I believe 83 was the last yr they had 4 spd manuals.
Common engine swaps are the 3.4(can be supercharged), supra motors(7mgte ), chevy 4.3 v6, chevy 5.3 v8, ford 5.0 and tons of others, since your getting a new tranny, you can either get a yota 5spd, or the 5 spd from those certain engines as well, most have aftermarket support.

I am not sure if a 5 speed would bolt in, but I would assume that a w56 would bolt in place of a w46, but I do not know this for a fact. 4 speeds were put on 4x2s, even in later years. 4 speeds have a higher geared axle, so 4th is similar to 5th in a 4x4. You might want to keep that in mind if you swap to a 5 speed. 5th gear will be almost unusable with the 4 speed axle ratio unless you swap in an engine with lots of low end torque.

I found some information in my 1987 brochure. Here are the axle ratios that are listed:
4x4 5 speed manual: 4.100
4x4 4 speed auto: 4.300
4x2 5 speed manual turbo: 3.417
4x2 5 speed manual: 3.727
4x2 4 speed manual: 3.071
4x2 5 speed manual 1 ton: 3.900
4x2 4 speed auto 1 ton: 4.100
There is also a 3.583 listed that I am unclear on what it is for, but it appears to be for a SR5 Xtracab Sport.
