Need opinion on 4Runner with engine problems
Hopefully posting this up here doesn't get this rig poached out from under me.
http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/140650542.html
So I've been looking for pretty much exactly this runner to replace the '92 pickup 4x4 22re 5-spd I'm currently driving. However, it will need some as yet unknown engine work. I have a very good, very trustworthy mechanic who will give me a fair price for the work, but won't be able so see the truck until after I purchase it and tow it to him. I figure at worst, I'm looking at $1000 for a 22re engine swap/rebuild and another $500 for the clutch which still sounds pretty good if the rest of the truck is in the shape the seller says it is...
Any opinions? Is the price fair? Am I possibly underestimated the needed engine work?
Thanks all.
edit: to save you haveing to follow the link, here's the text regarding the engine and most recent work (currently has 202k):
---Needs---
22RE Engine has a rod problem say two independent mechanics. The only way they can say how much work is needed requires dropping the oil pan to take a look, which I haven't done yet. Good news is engine does start and idles. But then it starts to make noise with a little gas, so it cannot be driven nor smogged at this time. It's been parked ever since I got it.
Clutch needs to be replaced (last done at 156k with new bearings, see below)
---Recent new parts---
199k Cylinder head was rebuilt, all done by a shop
- head resurfaced
- new timing chain, gears, guides
- new valve seals
- new water pump
- new oil pump seal
- new thermostat & gasket
- new cap & rotor
- new ignition wires
198k
- new Throttle Position Sensor
195k
- new belts (all three)
-----------------------------------------
I'm also considering this one, but not sure if all the title legwork is worth it. Anyone gone through this before? (Owner purchased truck from a guy that hadn't completed the original transfer of onwership...)

If that's the original engine in it, it wouldn't hurt to get ya a rebuilt anyhow. You can get an engine for around 1000.00, but that's without labor.
The 22res are better than the 6 cylinders from what I've seen and read.
I bought a 93 4x4 pu for 3200, and the dang oil pump went, then the engine blew...lol...so I had to get a new one. Thing is, get it from a place that'll give you a good warranty, because I had to take mine back a couple times for small oil leaks and stuff like that, but fine now.
