Hey do you happen to have more pictures of that rig? I think it's the only one I've ever seen that is 4 on the floor with a 22re, I thought they were all five speeds or autos. The avatar makes it look like a bad @$$ farm truck.

my dad put the k&n air filter kit on his 89, its the whole thing and no it dont add much more horsepower if you dont change your fuel. Meaning just like with carbs and back to basic you add more fuel you need more air add more air need more fuel but my dad had larger injectors and a chip i believe to increase the amount of fuel being sprayed in so adding that k&n set up helped him not hindered him ITS ALL IN THE SETUP! me personally i dont think it hurts if you buy a ( OEM replacement ) air intake system.

If you really want to do this and cheap I would get a "cone" cold air filter and use pvc to make the tubing.
We did it on my friends jeep It wont add power, but It will allow a little less air restriction.
Still a fun project,I would do it if you want to just for the fun and learning experience. It wont matter in the end if it adds power or even works at least you can say you did it.
Have fun when building your truck and don't worry if other people think it's stupid.

I did not catch if this was on a 4wd or 2wd...........
2wd go for it
on my 93 (2wd) I have a custom intake setup that I built:
relocated the battery to under the bed
moved the intake to the passenger side then using some bent 3" AL pipe it goes directly down from the throttle body connects to a supra afm and then a cone filter ending just above the stock splash guard.
Works great, increased performance (really the stock intake flows worth crap guys plus going directly over a hot ass radiator is not conductive to performance) and cleaned up the enigne bay (my main goal with the street rod lol).
I have an intake on my 86 4runner.....made a difference as well but I have internal motor work and full exhaust. However this thing is such a slug that it's harder to notice a couple more ponies when compared to my 93. I really need some gears for the 86......
I've got pics of the setup if interested.....
