I bought a camshaft awhile ago for the 22r. It was made by Mikuni but they dont make them any more nor do I know the specs on it. Anyone ever use or hear about these cams?

I am no expert, but by some searching I found this info. I'll update this if I find more.

Old thread I know, but I was searching for the specs on the mikuni cam I'll be running in the 80 and this thread popped up! So far this is the most usefull info I've found on my cam.

For anybody considering buying one, if you can still find them, you'll need to either run a newer valve cover gasket or clearance the little oil tray on the inside top of the valve cover on the older round style valve covers. I didn't on mine when I ran it briefly before, and while it didn't mess anything up I did see where the rocker arms were making contact with that little pan. It's very thin metal and easy to tap in with a hammer and 3/8" extension, or anything else that's blunt.

I only drove the truck very briefly when I stuck the cam in a couple years ago. It was running poorly and I kept tinkering and tinkering with it, finally saying screw it and drove it to work. That was a mistake and a blessing in disguise because I blew the engine going to work, but I believe the reason it was running so poorly was because one of the rod bearings was going bad and may have been binding a little.

I just got it all back together and running today and will be driving it soon after I fix the brakes and completely re-do the exhaust and will pop back in after I get some seat time to let people know what I think of the cam.

I still have the cam brand new in the box. I bought it years ago thinking I was going to do a side draft on my 22R and then reality kicked in. Now since I have no use for it I'm going to get rid of it.

Well, I got a few hundred miles of driving in with the cam, but the carb has been jacked up so I really can't comment on it's characteristics, other than it really seems to come alive about 3700-3800 rpm and above. I needed to burn off the 2 1/2 year old gas before doing any tuning, and decided to run a full tank of fresh gas with sea foam in it before working on the carb, then about a week ago it started running very poorly on the way home from work. It's actually good news, cause it probably means whatever was blocking a passage in the carb got busted loose, then it blocked another passage even worse. I'm now down enough on fuel to go ahead and rebuild the carb, and I think I'll chuck on a new fuel pump while it's down too. After that, I should be able to get some solid input on how the cam works!

Finally pulled the carb the other day and found a wad of crap in the bowl, either the fuel hoses are coming apart inside or the diaphram in the fuel pump is slowly coming apart. I went up to a 150 fuel jet on the secondary instead of the 140 I had, re-set the idle mixture to 1.5 out, installed an inline filter right before the carb and went for a test run.

What a difference! I still need to do some tuning when we get a break in the weather, but the truck only has a slight flat spot off the bottom now, and it seems that the cam does pull harder on top like I was thinking. It actually seems like it pulls about the same as my 2wd, maybe even revs up a little quicker. Can't wait to get some real tuning done and pull out the full potential of this setup!
