Marlin Crawler T-Case gears and V6 T-case

I've been reading up on Marlin Crawler t-case gears, both the 4.70 gear sets, as well as the dual t-case set ups they offer. (ok, ok, dreaming and drooling)

However, the instal instructions are for gear driven t-cases, and for dual set-ups they say you need to use a gear driven t-case. But made no mention on use of chain drivens.

So does anyone know if you can use the same gear set with a chain driven t-case as with the gear driven cases? Or if I'd need to replace my existing case in order to get a lower crawl ratio?

Silly question, do you have a 5 speed or manual?

Thats why is was a silly question

The reason you only see gear driven is because thats all you can do. The gear driven case is stronger, but not used in V6's, or 4cyl runner 90-95 since it is not shift-on-the-flyabe...Marlin makes everything you need to run a gear drive behind your v6 tranny.

You can only throw away the chain-driven cases. they use a planetary gear system. Marlins gears won't work with these.

Cebby,
Respect.
That was really funny though. I think you saved yourself by saying it was a silly question.

the geardrive case is most certainly shiftable on the fly, provided your hubs are locked. it just doesn't have a synchro like the chain drive case.

you can adapt the gear driven case to your V6 tranny with an adapter plate and 23 spline input gear.

There was talk on Marlin's board for a while about a chain case adapter, but it ended up being vaporware. I don't think they had the cycles to test it, but there was a lot of interest. All-in-all I don't think there was a lot of cost saving going that route.

True, but I was going off the synchro vs non-synchro deff...

Are there trucks with ADD and Gear Drive, becuase they would have no way to shift unless stopped...

so all you have to do is aquire 2 stock gear driven cases, and the lower gears, and the adater plate and diffrent input gear.

all of which will set you back a small fortune!

if you have a v6 truck and want super low gears like the "cool" rock guys, buy 1st gen with 22re and go from there... then its only $600-800 for dual cases with one set of lower gears...

see http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/tra...ickup_dual.htm for all the drewling - eye poping goodness

I've got a 5-speed...and a manual.

Where would I be able to find a t-case adapter and new input shaft? There seem to be 1st Gen's popping up every so often in the Junk yards here, so the t-case wouldn't be too too hard to find.

Two questions about going to a gear driven t-case though: 1: would using the adapter mean that it's going to be longer and therefore need a new driveshaft. 2: are (most) 1st Gen t-case top or forward shift? and what would need to be done to go from my current top-shift to a forward shift...if need be.

i think the adapter is under an inch thick -- your slip yokes will make up that difference.

in the grand scheme of things, i'm pretty sure most cases were forward shift. ALL '79-83 cases were top shift, and other that that, only '85-88 EFI trucks had top shift cases. you can convert forward shift cases over, but the kit is about $80 from marlin. i can pick up top shift cases for that much all the time if i look.

The adapter is avail through all pro, marlin crawler, inchworm, advanced adapters, and a few others.

1. Yes adding an adapter will make the setup longer, and your drivelines will have to be moddified.

2. Depends on EFI or Carb (W or G series) transmissions. W series are top shift cases, G series are forward shift (w=EFI g=Carb)

You dont want a forward shift case, you want a top shift case if you are looking at dual cases.

Also, i believe turbo transfer cases are forward shift? I had to have mine converted to top shift when I did my dual cases. Forward shift cases dont work, becuase the middle case in a dual case setup only shifts high and low....no 4x4. the 4x4 part is left to the second case, which also needs to be top shift.
