Manual Locking Hub Problem

Hello all, I Have a question concerning my '91 4x4 Truck.

- When I go to lock or unlock my hubs it takes a lot of force to turn it to the correct position. I have strong hands and almost had to resort to using slip joint pliers as a spanner wrench. Is this normal (I have had the truck only since last november)?

I am having my doubts about this excessive need of force, especially since I noticed this past winter there might be a problem with the mechanism. During the on and off snowing conditions in the winter of southern Ohio I would leave the hubs locked in and shift in and out of 4wd as needed, but while locked in while in 2wd I would get an excessive vibration when I would slow down (similar to a stuck caliper) after driving at 55 for 10-15 minutes. I am fairly sure this is hub related as this vibration would occour even during engine braking and I could feel no heat coming from the rotors. Also to the problem remmedied itself when I unlocked the hub. hmmm.... lubrication issues perhaps?

Thanks for the info and the link guys, a rebuild is in order. I can't get my mind around the vibration issue though. I don't understand how the hub could cause it, although all of the diagnostic indicators point to it.

Maybe a CV, axle, or driveshaft problem. They all turn with the hubs locked.
