I found something of much interest I wanted to share with everyone. Please read the following:
also here:http://toyota.offroadforum.cz/aarc.e..._Selector.html
Seems like a good guide to adjusting your timing by Toyota specs. Just consider the timing adjustment done by twisting the distributor to be the same as if done with an octane selector. Because it is. Results should vary, that's the point of adjustability.
In simple terms for us EFI folk, what your trying to find is the point why the ECM isn't able to suppress pinging based on the knock-sensor readings. Then fine tune to a point where the level of pinging is acceptable. Appearently some engines won't want to ping much at all, and others will, depending on several things. First the overall health of the ignition system, a stock system in good shape is very resistent to pinging under normal operating conditions. The more engine upgrades, including ingition in my opinion, the better for the most part. If your trying to get ahead of the ping and make some extra HP.

Hadn't thought about the plugs too much. Could get "cooler" ones maybe.
I should check mine and see if they still look alright, thanks for reminding me...
Several guys on here have been running at 17* BTDC, with lot's of mods it seems like. I'm a "risk taker" though, don't mind pushin' limits much....

So, I just pulled and regapped all 6 spark plugs. Each was over-gapped about .003"(.034"). Other than that they were in great shape, for about 10k miles worth of use.
I also found a cool site about spark plugs and engine tuning/performance today. With this pertinent little tidbit.
Advanced Ignition Timing: Advancing timing by 10* causes plug temperature to increase by approximately 70*C to 100*C.
I'll be keeping a close eye to determine whether I'll need a colder plug than stock. All seems fine for now, just need to keep up on the gaps I guess.

You guys are lucky i mean 15 btdc... dang mine pings at 0 btdc,
after replaceing, plugs, wires, roter, 02 sensor, TPS, coil, full engine rebuild. i am able to run it at 5 btdc with premiem gas ONLY any thing else and it pings crazy bad.

linuxrunner, Have you checked for any vacuum leaks? the engine will also ping if the motor is running lean. I had that issue, I would say check the plugs, but you say you just replaced them. are you jumping the diag ports?

You could get performance chips/modules for it probably. Or reprogram it. Might even be some kind of in-line ADV/RET unit to adjust on-the-fly you can make work with one of those systems. I ain't too familiar with that level of sofistication to be honest with ya.
Anywho, back to the thread at hand...
I posted last about my spark plugs needing regapped.
Well, that didn't end up working out quite as I thought it would. Meaning closing the gap back to specs, from .034 to .031, lost me some mpg. Back down to 18-20 mpg from 19-21 mpg. So I reversed that yesterday, and all is back to where it was as far as I can tell. I could definetly feel the difference immediately.
Next thread may be regarding this phenomena. Increased spark plug gap=more HP?

Another question on Advance Timing
I have timing @ 10 BTDC and with 87 oct. i can hear pinging while gaining speed at 3th and 4th gear, or even cruising in 5th, some backfiring when take off in 1st gear ( like a small explosion comming from the air filter box ??? ) the last owner told me he had head gaskets\timing belt done @ around 190k right now @ it has 210k, his solution to the pinging was always filling up with 91 octane, and so was i doing the same,(no pinging with 91 and it runs great ) blocking the egr helped a liitle bit for a few weeks but then it came back again, my mechanic said that the timing is where the manufacturer said is supposed to be, and changing it will make the engine run hotter, fo you guys thing that advancing a few degrees will help when using 87 or do i seem to have another problem.
oh another thing, ive notice a little of black smokt when WOT or trying to pass other cars no matter which fuel i am using.. ( mix to rich ??? )
