Installing factory AC in my truck - Need help!
#21
Sorry If I came across like a dink. I appreciate everyone's input here, but things just seemed to be getting repeated.
The box I have almost fits, it's slightly taller and wider, but it definitely won't fit. The plug up in the dash isn't right, but with the pigtail in between, it might be. I noticed the fan came with it's own lil wiring harness and fuse box for the engine bay, and thanks for confirming it's control is separate from the under dash wiring, that is very helpful.
Thanks for the pics man, I'm hoping that the 94-95 TRUCK R134a box looks the same. The one I have could be bigger because it's for a 4runner and there's more cabin space inside, or it could be bigger because R134a isn't as efficient as R12, and therefore needs more surface cooling area to have the same effect. I really hope it's due to the 4runner.
Hopefully someone has the answer for me, so I can complete this conversion and do a lil write up, although it's all pretty straight forward.
I might end up having to call around the junkyards and look for a 94-95 to go pull apart and compare...

When I did my 3.4 conversion, I decided to add A/C to my '90 pick up.
I got my parts from a '94 Runner, since I also wanted it to be an R-134 system. I assumed (go ahead and joke!) that, like most things in 3rd gen trucks and 2nd gen Runners, the parts would be a direct fit. As you also dicovered, they are not, in this case. It seems that the 4Runner stuff is larger to cool a larger cabin, so the air ducts were also larger, to match.
The solution that I ended up with was the '02 Tacoma compressor (from my donor), the fittings, hoses, condenser and drier from the '94 Runner, and an R-12 truck evaporator from a '92. I thoughly purged the evaporator, and also had the fittings cut off (wrong size for the Runner hoses), and had the runner evap fittings brazed onto the '92 evap box. I also had to do some cutting on my radiator frame to get the 4Runner condenser to fit in properly.
It's certainly a bit of a Rube Goldberg set up, but its still blowing colder than Eskimo hell two years later.
I hope that this is some help to you.

Thanks, that's tons of help.
So theoretically a Pickup R134a Box should be the one I'm after then eh? I'll make my way to the wreckers now, maybe they'll trade me.

I can't swear that the ducts are the same between an R-12 and an R-134 pick up, but I'd say that the chances are pretty good that they are.
If you still have it, you might take the A/C delete duct section with you, so that you can do a side by side comparison at the yard. The square holes on the sides of the ducts should both be the same.
