for future reference, if anyone happens upon this thread - i just realized you can do the same thing with 2.5" aluminum round bar, which is far cheaper than plate. local metal shop just quoted me $19/foot, so if you get 15" (to account for cutting) it's under $25 with tax. sounds good to me.

I forgot that I did use some round bar on my lift. When I made my BJ spacers, and High Lift mount for my FJC roof rack. I had slugs left over that I used as spacers(6 total,tried not to waist material) and made the last four out of bar. Cutting bar is a hole lot easier than hole sawing out slugs from flat stock. 2.5" is larger than you need 2'' or 1-3/4" would be fine.
