in the middle of my sas and im working on the steering.
i need to relocate my steering box but i also need to get my pitman arm off. this thing has probably never been off anyone got a good technique to remove them?

why relocate the steering box? and spend 20$ and rent a pitman arm pulled from autozone or advanced auto, youll get it back when your return it

The steering box gets relocated if you're pushing the axle way out, keeps the steering from binding on itself. There isn't really a technique for removing a pitman beyond a 1/2" impact gun and a pitman arm puller.

im running ruf springs and the axle is about 2 inches foward..
i didnt know they made a tool for this aha im going have to get one tomorrow thanks

Pullers don't always work. I broke three on my 4runner, so I'll share an alternate method in case you need it. Mine was really stuck, likely original. My advice would be to take an angle grinder with a cut off wheel (you will probably need more than one wheel) and cut into the arm. I went diagonal a little bit, instead of straight up and down with the steering shaft. Of course, don't get too close just like a mm from going all the way through. Then, take a smallish chisel in the cut and give it a few whacks. Will open up the cut and it will fall right off It's quick and a lot less frustrating than driving back and forth to Napa three times.

Haha, well I can see why he might stop that. It would be extremely easy to screw up the steering shaft. Also, don't know if its true, but I was told not to use heat either. Something about plastic gears in the steering box (?). Never opened mine up so I don't know for sure, but I decided not to take that chance. Good luck tomorrow! It can be a PITA.

It's called "scoring" the pitman arm. Cutting a little groove in it vertically allows the metal to release some tension and then using a puller is much easier. It's the way I take em off everytime as I have a new one in the SAS kit.

Plate and sleeve the frame too.

didnt think of moveing the axle forward, duhhh, hes my sign, wabbits way is good too beside a pitman arm puller
