Thats why the tire belongs in the bed if you are doing such things. Trust me, I learned the hard way too.

Ha...I have a chain tire carrier, it always make me think I'm lowering a drawbridge or something.

old thread but i think this is the appropriate place.
My spare is flat...its swinging around under the truck. I filled it up and it was good for a day, must be popped.
Next step- getting it out. Manual says i should have the jack handle mechanism...i don't see it, and i have an aftermarket bumper that is right up against the tailgate anyway.
There is about 10 links of chain looping from the center of the spare, so maybe i have the "chain style"???
How do I get it down?
I'm sure it's frozen, but I'd like to try some things before i cut it off.

You should be able to see the notch that your handle would slide into, then rotate to lower the tire.

The chain style seems to be really bad for getting siezed. Don't try to hard, its not worth it.. Removing the spare from under the truck frees up TONS of room. Plus, getting the spare out from under there is NOT fun, specially when you actually need it.

cut the link right above the tire (should be under tension) and drop it. then do as you please to store the spare/restore the old mechanism. that's your call haha.
