so i hold the nut and the sleeve and turn, right?
or am i supposed to somehow hold the tie rod end?
bc i've been holding the nut AND the sleeve, and turning the side in the picture closest to me UP, and i've been getting nowhere. this thing doesn't want to come loose.
This was supposed to be quick lol. just change the tie rod end. now it's taking forever and i have to go to work soon.

Once the lock nut is loose, and since the tie rod is on the vehicle, you'll have to hold the sleeve with a pipe wrench (the best) or channel locks or vice grips and turn the tie rod with another pair of previously mentioned implements of destruction. If it won't budge, likely you'll be working on it for a little while. The threads have a strong tendency to rust because water and dirt get inside the opening in the sleeve. You will spend a fair amount of time getting all the rust out before you can install the new tie rod end. If this is the case, and you have the option, put in back together and do it another time...since you have to go to work. Note to yourself: when working on the vehicle with repairs and replacements, allow yourself plenty of freetime for conundrums such as this.

Oh...good for you. My last tie rod end job took me nearly four hours. I had to take the old tie rod (with pipe wrenches and short cheater bars), cut the threads with a dremel tool, and chase the sleeve out with that and PB blaster. Yeah....real quick job. Fuhhh.......k!
You're welcome. Glad you got it.
