Got quote $6800 for a 3.0 engine swap
#42
I rebuilt the 3.0 in my 4RUnner and did the work myself.
I figure I spent $3500 for the motor and head work, with all new toyota parts (oil pump, water pump, pistons etc), seals and gaskets and belts.
Add to that:
Clutch set + machining of flywheel
New OEM injectors.
new OEM O2 senson
Head bolt kit.
Next, I would not even CONSIDER doing the labor on that hting for less than $1500.
So, I'd say that $5-6k is a good ballpark for a 3VZ-E
In the end, with all of the other little pain in the ass problems I've had with this 4Runner, I should have swapped in a 3.4 V6 or found a diesel to install.

Rethinking this....
For $6800 I'll take the motor OUT of mine and install it in yours. I'll go find a 3.4 and do the swap.
Rebuilt last fall, less than 5000 miles on it, runs like a raped....um...3.slow. I doubt you'll find a stronger running 3VZE, for what that's worth.
It's got everything possible for the 3.slow and you can have it all.
Balanced and blueprinted shortblock. engbuilder's rebuild kit
Ported and polished heads, intake and headers.
Custom Ground Cams
Oversize valves engbuilder's
Ceramic coated combustion chambers and piston tops.
Balanced injectors
K&N FPIC air filter system with new filter (less than a year / 5kmi old.)
NWOR headers & Y-pipe, ceramic coated inside and out.
Gibson 2.5” Cat Back Stainless Steel Exhaust - lifetime warranty.
Marlin Crawler Clutch
Jacobs Streetfighter Ignition
Dialed in, tuned, running great and it's ready to rock. 18mpg@80mph w/ 12" wide tires (wide tires suck mileage)
Might even be able to talk me out of the trans and tcase. I want an automatic.
PM if interested

I was quoted 5K to get a 3.0 rebuilt by a very highly reputable toyota shop, but that was with a great machine shop, and oem gaskets, seals, pistons, bearings etc. There are plenty of companies out there that can put together a quality engine for less, but you could swap in a low mileage 3.4 for about as much. At that point though, you ARE putting your trust in a junkyard motor, which ime they either end up being way better or way worse than you are told, so it's a toss-up. I guarentee you if you pay a shop $6k or more and it's a reputable shop, you will not have to think twice when asking them to warranty their work.
