Finished head gasket today.. results

Today I wrapped up the head gasket on my 22re. After startup, the only problem I had was the distributor was 1 tooth off. After resetting the timing it ran great. the temp came up fast and held good and the oil pressure was a little better than before I started.

I don't have any leaks yet and the idle seems to be a lot more stable than it was before I started. I still need to replace the radiator or have it professionally cleaned. It has always acted like it didn't have enough flow. It will idle all day just fine and heats up under load. I let it idle for about 30 minutes then drove around the block one time. By the time it started to rise above medium I was pulling back in the driveway, so it didn't have a chance to get hot.

Hey congrats!! I'm in the middle of putting mine back together after a HG replacement. Let's hope I have the same results!

why didnt u have the radiator cleaned while you were doing hte head gasket? not very smart to do all that work and risk overheating again. Buy a new thermostat while your at it too.

Now I have to work on the idle and tps setting. On startup it runs about 1500 rpms. After a few minutes it reaches temp and will go down to about 900. Even with the idle screw all the way I need to readjust the throttle stop and idle air valve and tps.

Well I tinkered with it some more and got it running even better. I had a problem where the idle would not go below 1200 for anything. I removed the throttle body and swapped out the idle air valve with an old one I had around. While I had it off I reset the throttle stop screw and the tps, since working on a bench is a lot easier than in the truck. That fixed my idle problems and now it runs normally.

It also seemed like it didn't want to reach operating temp very well and I thought the radiator was bad and going to need replacing. So I bought a new thermostat (195* instead of the 180* I had in it) and radiator cap and put them on while I had it opened up. When I finally started the truck I made sure the coolant was full and took it over to the ditch in the front. The sides are about 2-3 feet higher than the bottom. I parked the truck there and let it idle and refilled it as needed until I was sure all the air was out.

Whada ya know. I drove it around yesterday and had no issues what so ever. I drove it out in the woods a while and even drove it to work. I put about 100 miles on it yesterday with not even a hint of overheating.
