I plugged it with a metal plug and some sealer. Luckily my buddy is in school for machining and made me a plug but im sure you could make somthing elso fit into the hole.
I pressed out the pully piece. you could leave it in if you want and just cut enough that the belts dont interfer

It's cold out i think for now i may just cut some off and in the spring do what you did. Is that piece pot metal or steel or aluminum? Might be able to weld a piece of metal in and grind it and paint it black so you would never know. Just a thought

not 100% sure on the metal but its pretty thin. I bet you could weld in a plug or just get a piece of metal or somthing and seal it into it. Its not going to go anywere if you seal it with a good sealer

I was lucky. When mine went the truck was idling. It was -30 degrees celsius out and I was warming her up. I go inside the house for a moment, come back outside and hear the grossest noise. I pop the hood and see that the fan isn't even spinning. In fact, the crankshaft pulley is doing a fine job of melting through the fan... grrr....

took another look at it and it looks like a bearing went bad on the place where the fan bolts to. I think it is the fan pulley bracket. Anyway i just ordered a flex-a-lite 165 fan and i am going to put it in tommorow. Well i also had to buy a new radiator, 186.00 new electric fan, 253.00 to get it overnighted, and new belts for the a/c and alternator, don't know how much they will be. And a bunch of agrivation. All because of some bearing on a cheesey metal bracket(that by the way i called toyota and they want 798.00 for) I hope that the electric fan will keep things cool, i have a auto tranny and a/c.
Is that what happened?
I checked mine.... the bearing "feels" ok, meaning no slop in the bearing. If that is what is failing, maybe it should be replaced at some mileage?

For what its worth, my cooling with the stock setup is excellent. Rock solid.
Also, I've read that some have had problems with their electric fan, some swear by them.
But it seems to me, that for me, the smart thing to do (and least expensive) would be to aquire the pulley at a good price, then when I next change the belts, swap out the pulley. They seem to last a long time... so why not?
I'm at 154K on the 2nd generation, everything is in suspiciously good condtion, but I have no idea of the history of repair, other than that somebody paid a lot of attention to upkeep. But why take a chance.
addendum: I checked the cost of the idler pulley on Kragen's site.... $17.99.
Not sure this link will work... but just in case: http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...pe=806&ptset=A

Hey guys i was driving yesterday and i start hearing a grinding noise from under the hood. All of the sudden i hear this terrible noise and then all the acessory light s light up and no power steering. Right away i thought i blew a belt. So i pull over and look down and the whole fan and where it bolts to tore off!!! WTF!!! then i notice a huge hole in my radiator. What happened?

You probably should pull the timing cover just to be on the safe side. Mine had just broke when I got my runner and the guy had stuck a jerry rigged electric on it and drove it straight to the lot.
Long story short there were some balls from the bearing in the timing cover interfering with the belt and pulleys. If I weren't a pro this could have easily cost me a motor. Good luck. I have an electric fan wired to a switch and almost never have to use it but I don't drive in a lot of stop and go traffic and don't idle much.

This same thing happened to me a few years back. I started to drive and BOOM!!! the fan shattered with a puff of smoke. I thought I blew my engine. Thank goodness for full coverage insurance. It covered all damage in the hood and under the hood. They wrote me a check and then I immediately ordered a flex-a-lite 165 then went to the local pick-n-pull to fix any other stuff damaged under the hood. However I did not change the bearings in the idler pulley which I will be doing soon since my Idler pulley for my timing belt is going bad. Here goes another $???

Too bad i didn't get to this thread soon enough. I have a bracket I am gonna sell. lol They are famous for going south. Make sure the balls from the bearing didn't fall into your timing belt as they will tear it up
