engine health? pics inside
I took the head off my 86 22r last night, only to see what i expected. a tired motor with 185k+ miles never touching the motor except oil changes.

Heres my exhaust manifold, 3,4 looks like maybe to lean? getting hotter than the other two?

i just ordered a new timing cover, oil pump, intake manifold gasket because i forgot them first time ordering parts.
what do you guys think. can i get another 15k out of this motor when i put the new parts back together?

looks good compared to my old Isuzu I tore down because of a blown HG...
I wouldn't say a full rebuild is in order though. Definately kinda strange about the exhaust, but beleive it or not, carb problems can cause that to. Are you running a stock carb or something like a Weber? Any correlation between the exhaust and intake manifold, as in are the ports on the intake for 1&2 different than 3&4 like on the exhaust manifold?

i tore it apart because my oil and radiator would be filled with milky oil, no matter how many times i drained both, and then it would overheat, exhaust smelled like radiator fluid.
when i pulled the head, cylinder 2.3 had antifreeze on the top of the pistons.
stock aisin carb ,and intake ports 1,2 are darker than 3,4. 3,4 in the intake ports have the same grey burn marks as exhaust 3,4.
also how would i go about cleaning out the part of the intake manifold where the egr attaches to? both were filled with rock hard black carbon buildup? making the hole no bigger than 1/8"-1/4"
i cleaned the egr tube out with a file and brake cleaner

sounds like you might want to consider a carb rebuild while you got it out and taken apart
the carbon build up, about the only thing you can do to try to get it all out is soak that puppy in parts cleaner for a few days, and then see if you can try to jam a small wire-brush, of even a flat-head screw driver into the tight spots and scrap er clean; I've also seen people after soaking an intake in cleaner for a few days, take a bunch of large, heavy bolt-nuts and vigoursly shake them around inside the manifold (which actually seems to knock quite a bit off)
now that I think about it, that black buildup may have a correlation with the different colored intake and echaust ports...

I would say that as long as you weren't hearing any knock or slap out the motor you should get quite a few more miles out of it. The clean pistons and lite ports are due to all the water youv'e been scrubbing them with. I do strongly recomend new timing chain and gears since you have it this far apart. Here's a great thread to look at.
