when I was younger (16) and not quite as smart, I topped up my 78 mustang turbo with 4 quarts of oil... oops... didn't realize that with the sodium vapor lights in my apartment complex I couldn't see the oil on the dipstick. needless to say the army contacted me and wondered if i could use the car to lay out smoke cover for troups. lol. there was smoke coming out of orifices I didn't know the engine had. but by the time I'd realized what I'd done, the rings went south so off to the mechanic for a 1300 dollar rebuild and a new turbo.

thanks for replies. I checked the oil level and it is slightly below the full mark, it is as black as coffee. As far as the compression test, I'll do that and I'll let youknow what its reading.

It's not surprising the oil is black considering all the crap that must've came off your rings and the blowby. I suggest changing the oil again? Getting that black stuff out might help clear up the problem. Where are you at? If it's not getting below freezing try a straight 40 or 50 weight and seeing if that doesn't lessen the problem. You'll see a slight drop in mileage, but not much.

I live in southern california. I'll try changing the oil and do a compression test. Would you recommend pouring an engine cleaner before I change the oil, and should I use the straight 40.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend the cleaners. I'd rather see you drain a bit of oil and pour a bottle of seafoam, a quart of diesel or even a quart of dexron atf in there and drive it a few miles than pour petroleum solvents into the engine.

and since you're in socal, it's not getting anywhere near cold for a few months so you could use straight 50 weight.

Any particular reason you run such a heavy weight oil? 15w-40 is the highest I would go on a 22re. 10w-30 is best.

I was a cable contractor and I drove about a hundred or more miles a day I was told that 20-50 was good for all the driving I did.

If it was a Chevy 350 or 454 maybe 20 50 be OK but I would use 10 30 on it. and do the compression check

I'm guessin' all y'all recommendeding dat multywait oil ain't havin probems

I'm just trying to minimize variables.
After an oil change... lot's of blowby... = eliminate oil as a cause.

In anycase, don't run any oil over 15w-40 EVER. Next oil change stick some 10w-30 in there and see how much you burn/leak.

What do you think about Berryman's in the oil, abecedarian? Similar to Seafoam, but I don't think it's available all over the country.

Also, I don't know where the "more miles per day = heavier oil" comes from. I used my little 22re truck as a delivery truck for 5 years. Racked up 350,000 in that time span. It was nothing for me to do 250 mi/day. Some points even had nearly 1000 mi/day. (long day )

No one, especially not a mechanic, ever told me to run anything besides the 10w30 that's called for right on the oil cap.

In my experience and from what others have told me, you really have to try hard to screw up a 22RE beyond repair. Drain oil, change oil filter, fill with 10W30 and give that a try.

Any chance you drained the transmission instead of the engine, then put four quarts extra in the engine? I've heard of that happening. The oil drain plug is up by the front diff.

I have to agree drain that 20/50 change filter and fill with 10/30. I head a story from a guy that use to work at a dealer he said a guy was running 20/50 in a 8cyl when it called for 10/30 and when the motor gave out in the warrenty period he brought it to the dealership. When they torn the motor apart the pistons were black and they shattered when they were hit with a hammer. This happen to at least five trucks he knows about.
