Yeah, that happens sometimes. The slip spline got pulled out a little when you removed it, or while you were storing it. They can be hard to compress back down, and/or hard to extend for that matter. There's a partial vacuum you have to overcome inside the slip spline. It takes some pressure to squeeze the grease around, or push air in or out of the things usually.
I wouldn't worry about it.

the spline wasn't pulled out at all. It was up and tight, we had already overcome the vacuum, and there was only about 1/2" from collar to collar. the Splines bottom out at that 1/2" so you dont do damage to the yokes on full stuff. Anyone have an 88 V6 truck they know is 100% original who can measure their driveline??!

I guess an ex.cab with the same engine/tranny/t-case combo would have the same size driveshaft. They are the same wheelbase, 112" LWB. In fact, the one I have on there now could very well be off an ex.cab for all I know. I didn't ask, just measured to be sure it was the right length.

Yea I think you are right. So there ya go dan, take some measurements, and see if you have the right driveline in there.

upon further work (done today), i looked at the driveline again, and it now has opened up again.
so, we did fully compress it, but it somehow uncompressed about 1-1.5 inches. and i feel alot better. thanks for all the help, and the measurements, i will measure them this week. (got the interior out (firewall-bed is now bare metal)- rework in progress.

hmm thats wierd. Maybe having the suspension at full droop caused it to move slightly forward? I dunno, thats odd. As long as its working now!
