Distributor module ohm limit & rough idle question
My truck recently started sputtering while idling and so I started checking things. The factory manual says that the distributor signal generator should be 140-180 ohms. I checked it when the engine was warm and it was 188 ohms. After it cooled off it was down to 171. Should I be concerned about the 188 ohms or is it normal to be higher when warm? Would this cause sputtering while idling? By sputtering I mean that it sounds like afterburning in the exhaust. It only seems to do it when it is idling, unless I am just not noticing it at higher RPMs.

No. If the truck runs then the pickup it good. They usualy work or don't. I have had coils crack before on these trucks though. Also generic distributor caps are most of the time crap as well. Run the truck at night and see if you can see any arcing around the coil, cap and wires .

I have had coils on different vehicles work intermitantly (sp?), but when they aren't working, the engine stops. It is possible that your coil is on its way out, but I would look into vacuum related possibilities. Vacuum can for so many reasons cause sputtering.
Also check you TPS, Oh, never mind, yours has a carburater, that's where I leave the discussion, as I don't have one of those.

Thanks for the advice. I will check for vacuum problems. Would a clogged slow jet in the carburetor cause sputtering or just a rough idle? I took out my fuel cut solenoid to spray carburetor cleaner in there to try and clean it out, and I noticed there was no O-ring on it. I cannot find it anywhere and I am thinking it may have broke off and clogged up the slow jet or something.
